Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Durbin. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Chef Ken Durbin is the owner and founder of The At Home Chef. As an accomplished graduate of the Midwest Culinary Institute, Chef Ken first cooked professionally at The University Club and numerous other prestigious local dining establishments.
In 2013, he launched The At Home Chef to offer one-of-a-kind, in-home, fine dining experiences throughout Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. –
He has since been voted Best Chef in Northern Kentucky in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 by NKY Magazine, as well as Best Personal Chef in the Best in Chic Readers’ Choice Awards in 2021 and 2022.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the foremost challenges in entrepreneurship is the uncertainty that accompanies the initial stages of business development. In my early days, navigating through numerous errors was a gradual process of transforming a novel concept into a viable enterprise capable of sustaining my livelihood.
My vision was to establish a service offering exclusive fine-dining experiences within the comfort of clients’ homes, each event featuring a distinct menu.
This approach deviated significantly from the standard practices in restaurant kitchens. Over time, The At Home Chef underwent various transformations, culminating in a commitment to craft a bespoke menu for every client. Remarkably, in my nine years of operation, I have never replicated a menu.
Currently, my clientele includes local CEOs and NFL players, whom I have the privilege of serving regularly.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I create fine dining in-home dinner experience that creates memories that last a lifetime.
I am most proud of is the feeling I give to my clients each time I get to cook for them and their guests. Putting the phone down and picking up a fork to eat a meal that was designed for them in their own home.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Three essential qualities of a private chef are:
1. Culinary Expertise: Mastery in various cooking techniques and a deep knowledge of different cuisines, ingredients, and dietary requirements.
2. Flexibility and Creativity: The ability to tailor menus to individual tastes and needs and adapt to changing requests or unexpected situations.
3. Discretion and Professionalism: Maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting excellent interpersonal skills, and ensuring a high standard of service and cleanliness.
