Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexis Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Wilson. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Alexis Wilson

Alexis Wilson’s design journey began in high school when she went to Live Oaks Career Technical School in Milford, OH, for Interactive Media. Alexis knew after her first year there that she wanted to pursue design as a career. She graduated from The Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design. My first design job out of college was for a small business called Headsweats. In 2019, they closed the Ohio location, and that opened the door for me to begin freelancing full-time. I took a short break and started freelancing part-time when my son Felix was born in June 2022. I am now a full-time stay-at-home mom, freelancing part-time while also selling retro, 1950s-inspired handmade accessories and print designs on Etsy.

Alexis Wilson Designs is a small design studio based in Loveland, Ohio.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was a waitress at Skyline Chili during college and a little while after I graduated before I began working at Headsweats. I had a lot of regulars who became family, and they would tell people they knew about my design services. When I started freelancing in 2019, I didn’t have many clients, but the ones I did get were from people putting in a good word for me. I started building up my clientele over the years, and I’m thankful for all of them. It makes me happy that there are people who trust me to bring their vision to life with my designs.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Cincinnati-based Graphic Designer living my dream as a stay-at-home mom to my 18-month-old son Felix, a freelance designer and maker. I specialize in retro, 1950s-inspired graphic and handmade designs. I believe in creative, clean, and cheerful designs crafted with care. I’m committed to making design fun and being kind! Alexis Wilson’s designs are inspired by the 1950s with a modern twist. I enjoy expressing myself through my work and style.

I had the opportunity to design a new logo for Muddy Mutts, a pet grooming business in Milford, OH. The awesome owner, Tami, posted in a Facebook group that my mom is in about wanting a mid-century-style logo for her small business. I specialize in that style, so of course, my mom, who is also my best friend, posted my contact information. Tami reached out, and working with her has been a dream come true. I always wanted to see my work close to home. Now I can drive by the salon and say, I designed that! How cool. I love bringing my client’s vision to life!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Waking up and getting to do what I love all day, every day, is success to me.

I always wanted to be a wife, mom, freelance designer, and maker. Now, I get to do all four of those things from the comfort of my own home. My husband, Kyle, also works from home, so we get to spend extra time together as a family.

All of those years working full-time during college, staying up late, and pulling all-nighters to finish homework paid off.
