Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Haney.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I won my first award and fourth grade for art. I was president of my high school art club my junior and senior year. So, when I graduated, it was only natural that I go to art school. I attended the art Institute of Pittsburgh from 1990 to 1992. I graduated with a degree in advertising/graphic arts. The computer quickly took over the long-hand job I was taught. I joined a performance music band.🤣 I was exposed to a way of living that was unconventional, but it was perfect for me! I made my living with art. I’m pretty versatile with different mediums so getting a job doing anything from design to construction from Low brow to high-end. I love it all! Lol.
I learned how to tattoo in 1995 at Chronic Tattoo in Elyria.
I opened my own shop in 2004. In 2014 I was able to buy the Tuscarawas Avenue grade school in New Philadelphia Ohio with just money from art! It was amazing to see my dream finally come to fruition.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been as rough as it could have been. I am lucky and thankful to have what I do. There are always hurdles to jump when you push yourself. I’ve struggled with finding reliable help, too expensive fixes to the building. So far, there is nothing I have not been able to overcome.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an established Tattoo artist in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. I own My Museum Tattoo Studio in New Philadelphia. I learned to tattoo in 1995 and have earned awards in my industry for many years. I love doing realism\ surrealism
I love black and gray work, although every time I work in color, I say, I love color! Lol. Again, I love all art.
In 2017, I went back to school to learn cosmetic tattooing. I thought, if I was winning awards and realism, let’s take this to helping people feel themselves again after accidents, thyroid, incidents, or cancer… It has been rewarding.
After buying the building, I was able to set up areas to do all types of art. Painting, sculpting, assemblage and more. I love to make clothing and jewelry. Fashion, Dance…
I live within my collection and studios ❤️
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
When the COVID-19 crisis hit, it shut down my industry after 25 years of full-time, full steam ahead! I was devastated! I thought who am I? What am I going to do? It was pretty much all I did six days a week!
It actually enabled me to explore all the other avenues of art that I was good at. Now, I work a more part-time sensible schedule. Supplementing my time with making costumes for people, making jewelry, painting.
I spend more time with people in my community, doing volunteer work or attending Art shows and Festivals.
I feel more grounded and am able to do more with my time.
