Today we’d like to introduce you to Lilly Hiatt.
Hi Lilly, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing music as a kid. My dad is a musician, and I grew up around it. I knew it was what I wanted to do from age 6. I loved singing but was very shy about it. I started playing around with keyboards when I was little, but that didn’t really stick. I was always writing songs. But I kept them to myself. When I was 12, I started taking guitar lessons but quit not too long after. Finally, by 18, I had taught myself enough chords to perform in front of my high school and sang “Wild Horses” and “Angel From Montgomery.” That was kind of the beginning. I moved to Denver, started my first band out there with a bunch of kids from the music school at the college I went to. I wasn’t a music school kid, but I liked being around them. We all moved back to Nashville to “make it.” Our band broke up, but I kept performing by myself and went on to play with a lot of different bands all under my name. Here I am in Nashville, starting a new chapter with a new group of people. A lot of the folks I play with are songwriters as well. We all have each other’s back around here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t haha. But it’s been a fun road. I’ve met a lot of cool people. I’ve struggled just like the next person. I have a very addictive personality. It can work to my advantage when applied to the right things. But it can also be really hindering. That’s probably been my biggest battle. Luckily, I have a lot of support in my life, and lean fairly hard into that.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
So many people! My family-my dad is the biggest role model in terms of a career I’d like to have. He works hard and is good as what he does. My mother and sister are incredibly strong women who take life with a good dose of humor. They are visionaries. I’ve always deeply admired that. My brother is a hard worker and artist as well. He is a very modest person. My family means so much to me. My husband is a deep influence. Endless creativity and imagination with him. He is an excellent musician. He brings the best out in my artistry and really all those around him. My aunt Cynthia has been like a second mother and keeps a lightness to her that brings joy to all around. My in-laws are also two of the best musicians I know. And the community of Nashville. It all makes me wanna rock! Also, New West records is who got me out there. So, credit to them. And my very first band, Lush for Life! Also, the countless musicians who I’ve seen play live shows and who’s records I’ve listened to. They all deserve credit for sure, because that is deep inspiration for me.
