Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Parr.
Hi Alyssa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Creating art is something I have grown up doing. I have always loved painting, oil pastels, sculpture… whatever I could get my hands on. Art was my favorite class in school, and I grew up in a creative household where my mom always had crafts and art supplies handy. It was no surprise that I ended up at the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP program for a BSA in Fine Arts with a certificate in K-12 Art Education. I have been an art teacher at a rural high school for 10 years. Aside from teaching, I also have a small business where I sell my art, calligraphy and design wedding invitations.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have always been a “yes first, figure it out later” gal when it comes to my art and design. A lot of times, I will have clients ask for a certain design or material that I have never done before- an acrylic hand-written seating chart for example, and I will have to research and figure out how to make that idea come to life. While challenging and time-consuming, it keeps the work interesting as I am always being pushed to go outside of my comfort zone, and no job is ever the same.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My business is called The Printed Hand Studio, and we specialize in art, calligraphy, wedding invitations, and day-of items such as bar menus, seating charts, hand-written signs, and more. I love combining my artwork with my wedding work, whether that be with custom watercolor details on a wedding invitation or hand-drawn elements on a seating chart. I think my background in Art Education helps set my work apart, as I know a lot of different artist processes and styles to draw upon.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a shy, creative kid. I grew up in Southern Florida, where we spent most of our time outdoors, rollerblading around the neighborhood or riding bikes with friends. Being surrounded by nature year-round is evident in my art style, as most of my designs revolve around the botanicals and the environment.
