Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Engel.

Hi Aaron, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.

In college, I majored in Business and Information Technology. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but it seemed practical. I graduated and took on some leadership and management roles. I enjoyed helping people to solve problems, work together, and build helpful products and solutions. Eventually, I got burnt out with corporate life and took some aptitude and skills tests. They showed that I should have been in a helping profession (to some extent, I was). Counseling and Social Work were near the top of the list. I decided halfway through my career that I could be like co-workers who had a clock counting down until retirement and take the safe route or try something that seemed to be a better fit.

I went back to school and got my master’s in counseling. I now own a private practice where I specialize in working with couples. I still get to work with “teams,” but I find it more rewarding. I love the freedom and creativity that small business ownership brings, and now experience something new every day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Returning to school as a parent and husband wasn’t easy, but it seems a new normal for many people. Who knows what they want to do with their career and life at 18? Do the “top” jobs of a decade from now even exist?

All right, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I work with couples in varying stages. Some are happy and just want to communicate a little better. Some are on the brink of divorce. I am proud that I often get to help couples meet their goals for their lives and romantic relationships.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.

I think making a significant career change is a pretty big risk. My view on risk-taking is that one can only fail if they don’t learn something. I prefer calculated risks and feel like if I’m not occasionally “failing,” then I am not growing.
