Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Platt.
Hi Ellie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the Youngstown area and am proud to call the Mahoning Valley home. I attended Cedarville University in Southwestern Ohio but returned to Youngstown after graduation. My first job was with a non-profit organization doing marketing and fundraising. I loved my job and was passionate about working in our local community but had always been an entrepreneur at heart. I knew would someday build something of my own. After 10 years, I had the amazing opportunity to purchase an insurance agency and made the scary decision to leave my job and begin an exciting adventure as a small business owner.
12 years later, I am very proud of the business I have built. Platt Insurance an independent insurance agency offering a full range of insurance and risk management services. We have a team of 12 employees and 2 locations. We’re an independent insurance agency that represents multiple insurance companies for home, auto, business, farm, Medicare, and life insurance. I have the freedom and flexibility to be involved with a variety of local non-profits, which continues to be my passion. I have served on the board of directors for Oh Wow! Children’s Center for nine years as well as serving as Treasurer for the Rotary Club of Youngstown.
When I’m not working, I love to travel and am always exploring new destinations with my 15-year-old son Jake.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never easy to start a business from scratch, I’ve certainly made some mistakes and learned from trial and error, but overall, I’ve been fortunate to have steady and continuous growth.
My biggest struggle has been learning how to scale the business from just myself to multiple employees with different strengths and areas of expertise. I’ve learned the importance of delegation and building clear and consistent workflows and procedures.

Platt Insurance is an independent insurance agent that specializes in home, auto, business, farm, life, and Medicare services. We have a team of 12 agents that work hard to meet the needs of our clients on a day-to-day basis.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people would be surprised to learn how much fun insurance can be. We have built an amazing culture where people love to come and work each day.
