Exploring Life & Business with Akeesha Curry of Curry’s Tropical Sno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Akeesha Curry.

Akeesha Curry

Hi Akeesha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started from my unwavering desire to be an entrepreneur. As far back as I can remember, I have desired to own a business or organization of my own. My goal was to develop a business that speaks to my own vision and mission.

With the development of my shaved ice business and as a Tropical Sno dealer, I have the autonomy to do just that. Curry’s Tropical Sno is an independent partner of Pioneer Family Brands. Pioneer Family Brands owns the trademark rights to the Tropical Sno brand and is the manufacturer of Tropical Sno’s premium shaved ice flavors. I am proud to be a part of the Tropical Sno community of entrepreneurs and appreciate the support in helping to establish and expand my shaved ice business.

I am an educator at heart and run my shaved ice business in addition to my full-time career in the field of education. I have dedicated my professional career to developing students into future leaders and will always have a passion for teaching and learning.

Tropical Sno fulfills my entrepreneurial passion, love for sweets, and best of all brings joy to children and adults. Our variety of shaved ice flavors, toppings, and add-ons offer a truly unique experience. I enjoy watching our customers develop their own distinctive shaved ice concoctions. We are delighted to serve up smiles; one shaved ice at a time!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For me, the greatest obstacle in starting my business was encouraging myself to just do it! I have historically talked myself out of so many ideas and potential business ventures, as I’ve previously had other obstacles and responsibilities that needed to be considered before taking the risk of running a business. There will never be the perfect time to take the plunge in starting a business, so my advice is to be confident in your product, then prepare, plan, and execute!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Curry’s Tropical Sno?
Curry’s Tropical Sno is a vibrant and refreshing shaved ice business aimed at providing high-quality and delicious treats to customers in various locations. With a focus on events, a mobile unit, and serving at recurring locations, Tropical Sno aims to capture a significant market share in the dessert industry in our area. We offer a wide variety of flavors, appealing to customers of all ages and preferences. Our vision is to become the leading shaved ice vendor by promoting a fun, vibrant, and refreshing experience for our customers.

We use branded cups and marketing to complement the amazing shaved ice flavors. Customers can choose from different sizes and add-ons, such as cream topping and candy treats to enhance their shaved ice experience. I am most proud of our ability to captivate customers’ imagination as they experiment with their own unique flavor combinations.

We also offer catering services for events such as birthday parties, local festivals, community gatherings, corporate events, and school functions. Our mobile unit allows us to provide fresh, on-the-spot shaved ice for these occasions. We take pride in serving customers quickly and efficiently.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have found great support and motivation from my family, closest friends, and Sorority sisters. It is critical to surround yourself with individuals that will motivate you, push you to do more, and provide constructive criticism. It is equally important that you set goals and set aside time to self-reflect on your progress.
