Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Berg.
Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up wanting to be a rabbi. After a career spent in the Jewish nonprofit world working 70+ hour weeks, I realized I needed desperately to make a change. I took some time to travel and write and was baffled when people I’d never met wanted to read what I had to say about different places in the world. So, I decided to give full-time writing a shot and couldn’t be happier. Today, The Royal Tour publishes articles three times per week, features other writers than just me, and seeks to give people a sense of something deeper out of their travel experiences, focusing on history, culture, politics, and religion through the lens of a touristic experience. I want people to learn from reading and am still pleasantly surprised with each new reader and subscriber.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Writing is not the way to make a stable living. But besides giving up my prior good income for pennies on the dollar, it’s hard to find an audience and a niche. Social media has never been my strong suit, and I fashion myself as more a classical print journalist in an era in which that is mainly dead. But waking up and exploring a new place gives me a sense of calm I’ve never had in my life, and I know that despite the struggles, I am truly blessed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a travel writer, but focusing on the deeper side of travel. Nothing excites me more than telling the story of a historical figure from another place I’d never heard of before or the food or dance culture of a new country. Travel can be so much more than sitting on a beach with a tropical drink (though the story of the pina colada was fun to write), and I want to inspire those experiences in my readers. The more we learn, the more we experience what makes a place unique and wonderful, the better world we make.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The easiest thing is to visit my website and read an article. If you like it, read another. Maybe subscribe. If you are really enjoying it, please share it with your friends and family. You can also send me ideas of things to see and stories to write, especially from the Cincinnati area. And finally, if you are like me and love telling stories of places near and far, I’m always looking for more writers to add their voices to mine.
