Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Bush.
Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hive Works Honey Company is a family-owned and community-focused honey company dedicated to saving the bees and inclusion for all.
It all started during Covid- 19. One day after work, I came home to a note on my front stairs. The note was from my 90-year-old neighbor; it read, ” My Daughter is making me move in with her out of state. Could you please take care of my bees because I can’t take them with me.” And just like that Hive Works Honey Co was formered. Fast forward a few years, and we run over 80 hives, have Partnered with United Cerebral Palsy and other organizations like them to provide job training skills to individuals with disabilities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a company from scratch is never easy. At every turn, something is either going wrong or about to go wrong. With the bees it is no different. From worrying if they will make it through the winter to will we ever get a spring in Ohio. It hasn’t been an easy path, but I believe that if we didn’t face those challenges we wouldn’t be where we are today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Hive Works Honey Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Hive Works Honey Company is a family-owned and community-focused honey company dedicated to saving the bees and inclusion for all. We could not be where we are without all the support from community, and believe that everyone has value and the right to be represented; we are proud that all of our products taste amazing but also help us push our mission that EVERYONE BELONGS and help promote honeybee awareness through programs sponsored by local partners that share our vision.
Our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable pipeline of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By supporting our vision, you’re helping to make a positive impact in the lives of individuals and communities everywhere.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Beekeeping requires patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn and adapt to the circumstances. Successful beekeepers understand the behavior of bees and the conditions necessary for their health and well-being. We also have a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment. I feel that all of the qualities that make me a great beekeeper give me the tools to succeed in any field.
