Exploring Life & Business with Andrea Duvall of A.DuvallCo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Duvall.

Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you for having me! I am the owner as well as esthetician at A.DuvallCo, a new Columbus salon. This journey all started when I attended Fairfield Career Center my junior and senior year of high school and graduated with my cosmetology license. I attempted to do hair at first and quickly realized it wasn’t my thing, but in the process of finding what I wanted to do, I worked across from a Benefit Brow Bar at Easton Macy’s. I would walk up and talk to the girls there every day I was at work to try and figure out how I could get a job as their Aesthetician. Also, anytime the regional area manager would come in I would ask her if there were any job openings. I did this for probably a year until one day the area manager came in a b-lined right to me and said they were opening a Polaris location and asked if I wanted to help get that brow bar started. I’m pretty sure that day I put in my 2-week notice without even interviewing first, but I was that excited and determined to get the job. I worked for Benefit Cosmetics for 3 years and I would say that’s when I found my passion for the esthetic world. I attended multiple trainings in Chicago and in different cities to better my skills, and my love for learning grew. I decided that it was time for me to go out on my own and start my independent journey I worked at a loft for 2 years and the grew my business working at Bespoke Salon Studio in Bexley for 4 years and a year at Self Beauty LLC, a medspa in Grandview. While working one day one of my clients, who is also my relator asked if I wanted to buy a salon, and I instantly said no. haha I shot the idea down so quick because I didn’t think I was ready for that yet but then I got home and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I texted her back that night and told her to go ahead and send me the info and the process of opening A.DuvallCo started.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, everything was pretty smooth, I’d say. I started the process of looking at the space in July 2022, got the keys mid-November, and we moved in and taking clients February 2023. The only hiccup we had was our space flooded slightly in January when we had freezing temperatures. Our “neighbor” had a pipe burst in the ceiling, and the water from her space made its way into ours, but thankfully nothing was damaged, so it just took a little cleanup, and we were right back to it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent esthetician and permanent makeup artist in Columbus, Ohio. We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
I would say opening this salon was a risk for sure! Especially after watching what happened in 2020 during Covid. It’s a huge investment, and it’s something bigger than I’ve ever done in my professional career, but I believe you have to take risks to grow. I didn’t want to look back and wonder what if. I had to at least try. I have SO MUCH support between my family, friends, and clients that If I wasn’t going to do it for myself, I at least had to try for them.
