Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Shamarah Hutchins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dr. Shamarah J. Hutchins, raised by her maternal grandmother, spent majority of her career in the mental health field focusing her passion on substance use therapy, where she holds a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency License (LICDC). Her first-hand experience with chemical dependency started with her parents, and at 7 years old Dr. Hutchins told her mother, “I’m going to be a doctor.” Defying all odds and determined not to become a statistic, Dr. Hutchins excelled in her academics graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and going on to complete undergrad at Wilberforce University, where she was a collegiate athlete, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Hutchins earned her master’s in psychology from Capella University and, as she promised her mother, earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Walden University.
Growing up Dr. Hutchins suffered from understanding where she belonged, she suffered from self-esteem and self-confidence problems. She was once an athlete who dealt with mental health problems with no one to turn to for help. After a long journey of working and healing she now has the mindset that our history tells our story, but it is not our destination. All of her triumph led her to start Serene Counseling & Wellness. Here is where Dr. Hutchins mission is to change the game of mental health in life and sports. The organization is grounded in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) but understands a person-centered approach is needed to build a strong bond between self and client. Dr. Hutchins focus through counseling, consulting, and coaching is on women’s self-esteem, mindset awareness/training for entrepreneurs, and working with athletes to provide an overall healthy outlet to express mental health roadblocks.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth roadblock as dealing with my internal issues caused me to have setbacks on my external goals because I suffered from depression there were times I failed to accomplish tasks I was suppose to finish. Due to my lack of self-confidence and self-esteem, I lost some friendships that were valuable to me. Also due to not having focus academics earlier in life failed which caused me to turn my attention to a new field of study. However, the field I turned to was what I absolutely needed in my life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I believe role of bad luck of not having my parents turned into good luck because it taught me determination, dedication and grit to get what I want out of life. It showed me that doing drugs and alcohol was not cool and I had to be a role model for my siblings. I believe good luck comes from my belief in God. He will never forsake me; he has always been there every step of the way guiding me to the next step.
