Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Herbst.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working as an Esthetician in 2010 and Sugaring sort of fell into my lap. I knew right away it was something huge- I loved the results, loved the technique, loved everything about it! I wanted to be able to create an environment for women that was fun, friendly, upscale but not uppity. I had a lot of issues with body image and self-esteem as a young person and that kept me from going to high-end places where I felt I didn’t belong. I knew my business had to be something that was warm and welcoming to all women of all body types, backgrounds, and stages of life. I started with just one small room and a receptionist and added an employee each year until expansion was necessary. Sugar Bar today has two locations, 12 employees, and plans to expand further in the future. I prefer to hire and support single mothers and women in recovery whenever possible, and the greatest gift of my career thus far is knowing I am providing jobs for women like me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have loved being a business owner and I have learned so much along the way about managing women, treating people with love and respect, and always choosing to be kind over being right. I cannot say it has been easy, but it was not truly hard until COVID-19 hit us. I have always brought my faith into my business and as long as I don’t let fear take over, I seem to do just fine. COVID price increases on supplies made things difficult, jumping into a new normal was difficult. But we survived and thrived, and Sugar Bar has kept it moving! Every obstacle I have faced has allowed me to become more compassionate toward others and their struggles, and for that I am grateful.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sugar Bar. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sugar Bar is a Body Sugaring Studio and Day Spa. We offer full body sugaring services from head to toe, featuring high-quality sugar pastes made by Alexandria Professional in Buffalo, NY. A lot of people still do not know what body sugaring is! It is hair removal that actually conditions your skin. The hair is removed all the way down to the root of it while the pore is lubricated, and dead skin is only gently exfoliated. This is all part of the unique process that makes sugaring so special! What really sets Sugar Bar apart from other spas, besides our award-winning services, is our atmosphere. At our locations, we spend time and energy ensuring that every client feels important and appreciated from the minute they walk in the door. At Sugar Bar, you are welcomed into a community of women. Our goal is to make your experience as comfortable and body positive as possible.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Taking care of employees is the most important part of taking care of business. I put a lot of time and effort into ensuring I am a good boss and the type of person they can come to if they need something. I briefly worked for an amazing woman named Mariam Giardini who put her employees first- I learned a lot from her in my short time at her business and am forever grateful to her for the person that she is.
