Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Lou McElroy.
Hi Carter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated early from Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music with a BFA in Theatrical Design and Production at the end of 2009. At that time, I was looking to find a job in Casting and in the meantime had landed an internship at an NYC Talent Agency. The agency lived up to the cut-throat environment I had been warned about when moving to New York… and I realized pretty quickly that a job in the Theatre world was no longer something I wanted. A college friend who knew I was also a songwriter recommended me for an internship at a Music PR & Marketing firm. I told my interviewer that I had absolutely no experience in PR but was a hard and accountable worker, willing to do whatever it took to build a career in Music… “Sounds good!” She hired me for an internship and 8 months later I became full-time for the next 12 years.
Today I’m in my 13th year at the company I started working for the year I moved from Ohio to New York.
This year I’m excited to celebrate our 30th anniversary… working on some of the most incredible projects I’ve ever been part of… & to release my 2nd Cyote single: “none the wise” on Tuesday, February 21st!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think every year is a struggle if you work in an Arts industry, with 2020 as undeniably one of the hardest. The majority of our clients are musicians who financially rely on their ability to tour… playing for millions of people all around the world. When we couldn’t leave our homes, we didn’t even know if our industry would survive.
Working in PR & Marketing is the quintessential “best of times and worst of times”… in that although it can feel depleting… the good days feel like magic. Like you’re a real part of the cultural legacy this generation will leave behind.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Inspired by art that provokes activism and storytelling that strengthens community, I am a mixed-media artist & songwriter based in the Hudson River Valley of New York, Mohican Territory… and the current Creative Director for Girlie Action Media & Marketing.
In February of 2020, I debuted my first single and music video (“red”) via BUST Magazine and will be sharing my second (“none the wise”) this coming February of 2023. Catch my live set otherwise at Sarah Gray Miller’s Coxsackie, NY speakeasy: Ravish Liquors, where I moonlight as the house band & also where I’ll be hosting my release party for “none the wise” on Saturday, February 25th this next month.
At Girlie Action, I produce short and long-form videos for other artists alongside leading one of the hardest-working Digital Marketing teams in the game. This past year we were extremely proud to be part of the team behind the unparalleled Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure© exhibition in New York City & we are looking forward to launching the show’s west coast debut in Los Angeles on March 31st this year!
