Hidden Gems: Meet Nick Murray of Ohio Leather & Lumber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Murray. 

Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had an interest in building things. It started as a kid watching my dad in the garage and grew from high school shop class to a post-college hobby and finally to a business. Ohio Leather & Lumber was started in 2018 in a small attic in Lakewood, Ohio. The business and family has since grown into a larger space where I am able to grow my passion for furniture. I work with both traditional hand tools and modern-day machinery to make heirloom furniture. Every piece that comes through my shop is made using time-tested traditional joinery with quality and longevity in mind. Our motto, “Local Goods for Good Locals.” is a promise to the community that we will provide the highest quality furniture and products. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any business has had a smooth road in the last few years, but we have been very fortunate with our business growth and development using limited resources. My wife and I have been blessed with three beautiful daughters in the last three years and that has presented its own challenges. Ohio Leather & Lumber continues to grow as our community grows and we have no intention of stopping! 

As you know, we’re big fans of Ohio Leather & Lumber. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We live and breathe customer experience and satisfaction. Designing and building custom furniture is only part of the job. The pieces we build are an extension of the people we build them for, and I think that is what sets us apart. There are hundreds of websites and stores where you can buy furniture but not one of them are unique to you. 

Brand wise we are most proud of our community relationships. There are a ton of great small businesses in the Akron area! Check them out!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
By far my greatest source of happiness is my wife and kids! They make all of this possible and are my main source of support. The whole process of building/restoring furniture can be finicky and frustrating, but they are a constant reminder of why I love what I do.
