Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsie Tomlinson.
Hi Kelsie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 7th Grade, I first wanted a camera to record YouTube and beauty review videos on Instagram. I started exploring the camera’s features and began taking photos of anything and everything. I shortly realized that the small little photo shoots I was doing with my friends in middle school is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
I started charging people small amounts until I became confident in my work and raised prices as I continued to grow as a creator. Up to this day, I have done countless senior photos, family sessions, and fashion editorial galleries as well. My love for photography continues to grow and I hope to have an even bigger company in the future.!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall it has been a smooth road. There will be times when I feel unmotivated and need to take a step back to improve my content, but everyone goes through those phases. Sometimes it just takes some time off to get creative again. Once you get in the groove of things and you’re booked every day creating you will find your niche and find joy in what you do every day!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am mostly a portrait photographer. I love capturing moments in people’s lives and bringing them to life. Senior photos, couples, and fashion are my favorite concepts to shoot. On the side of portrait photography, I work for a commercial company taking photos of their work. The company is Your1DayFloor, a concrete coatings company.
My job there is to capture on-the-job, before and after, and behind-the-scenes shots for their social media and website. I am most proud of myself for being confident in my work and not letting the work of other photographers’ “better work” get me down. My work and my style is why I fell in love with what I create, and not comparing myself to others and being myself in this business has improved my work and made me stand out.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being overwhelmingly happy with what you do. Not just satisfied or comfortable, but genuinely happy and excited to create what you do. Alongside making a profit and growing your business, you could be a millionaire and not be happy with what you’re doing. I see success as the profession you love and making that profit at the same time. If you aren’t happy creating or doing work for others then what’s the point? If I’m happy my clients are happy and that is all that matters.
