Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Sengelmann
Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was attending Miami University of Ohio studying for a bachelors degree in Psychology. My junior year I lived in my first house and started baking at home. Ever since I was a little girl, baking was always a passion/hobby of mine. I would ask for new pans for Christmas’ and birthdays!
By the time I was a senior, I started baking custom cakes and cupcakes for my friends birthdays. When I would go to their birthday party, girls started approaching me and asking me if I could bake cakes for their friends birthdays as well, and, offering to pay me for it. I also was approached to bake cakes and cupcakes for graduation parties and started making decent money from it. I thought to myself, “I think this is what I really want to do!”
Growing up, every woman in my family were great bakers and cooks. Because of this, I never really saw it as a talent until other people around me did!
After college, I got a job at a small bakery in the North Market while continuing to grow my business. At first, I would really only charge people for the cost to make what they ordered. I was using my business as an opportunity to practice and hone my talents and get paid to do it. As I’ve gotten more experience, I’ve been able to keep my prices down but still make a profit. Now, I have been a baker professionally working in kitchens for 3 years and baking at home all the time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been pretty smooth. The hardest part for me was all the parts besides the baking! I had to learn how to make a website, run a social media account, take food pictures and set prices. Not to mention making a logo and brand… I was lucky to have people in my life who excel in these areas help me out!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I never thought I would say this because it was definitely not a skill of mine when I started out, but, I specialize in custom cakes. I love the creativity I get to utilize when making someone’s birthday vision come to life in cake form. Recently, I have done several wedding cakes, gender reveal cakes and bridal shower cakes. I feel so lucky to get to be a small part of someone’s special day.
What matters most to you? Why?
Happy customers!!!
I love getting feedback, good or bad, from my customers to help me grow in the future.
