Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennesha Nycole.
Hi Kennesha , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been sewing/designing for 15 years now. Initially my grandmother tried to teach me as a little girl because out of all her grandchildren I was the most interested. When I was in middle school I was very interested in styling and putting different things together and its funny to see what that has become today. My journey from that took me to career center in high school with a profound instructor that was such an amazing inspiration that led me to getting my BFA in fashion design after leaving high school. Fashion has always been an outlet for me, its always been a calm to my storm whether it was me making someone else look good, me creating something from nothing, or just simply being in awe from how much I’ve grown. The artistry of sewing and designing literally gives me chills seeing what things can become from a piece of fabric. Today I have my own Design and Tailoring Studio and this year will be my 9th year in business for myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
LOL, absolutely not. As cliche as this sounds it literally takes blood, sweat, and tears. Many many tears. Trying to navigate your 20s becoming a mother and navigating how to run a business, while not wanting to have a job job but still needing money to support the dream. All the naysayers, trying to get customers, the overtake of social media has definitely been a journey. My dad always told me consistency builds business and business builds money. I never gave up. This for me has always been Plan A,B, and C. I am glad I’ve stayed the course but ill never take away from the work I’ve had to put into it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Fashion Designer, Tailor, and Seamstress. I am everyones secret weapon. I am the one nobody see’s in the lime light but I am the one everyone calls. Its funny because when people ask what I do, I laugh and say ” I dont think there’s anything I don’t do or haven’t done. I love a good jacket lol that might still be my favorite thing to make because its also my favorite piece to wear. I’d say I am probably known for a good tailored look, I always have people tell me they seen one of my pieces and they just knew it was my work. If i had to say what i am most proud of i’d say its that i never quit. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I care deeply about craftsmanship, I love a hidden detail, and I believe that the inside of a garment should look as good as the outside. I want people to have my pieces in there closet in 20 years and the craftsmanship still speaks for itself.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
