Rising Stars: Meet HELDER DE ANDRADE of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to HELDER DE ANDRADE.

Hi HELDER, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello,

My name is Helder De Andrade, originally born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1984. My story starts around 13 to 14 years old when I started to have curiosity about crystals, herbs, natural magic and natural treatments. My grandmother from my mom’s side was very spirirtualized (she passed away a few years ago) and always helped me teaching about this kind of stuff, giving me books and resources. Some other family members like ants and uncles also gave me the push on this.
When I reached 18 years old I was finishing High School and had to decide for a path to go to college. At that time, around 2001, there was a big University in the South of Brazil at Santa Catarina State, that started teaching their first groups in a course called Naturologia Aplicada, almost the same as Nathuropathy.
I did just the first semester there because of financial resources then had to move back to Sao Paulo. In my hometown I started working in Clinics and Therapeutic Schools to help me keep connected to my heart’s will. Working in the administration for many times and later in Marketing, which led me to go do an Associate Graduation in Corporation Communications. Around 2007 I finished my Associate degree I went to United States for a year, to live with my uncle and went to study at Columbus State Community College, in Columbus Ohio, some ESL courses to help me improve my English.
That gave me great experience and in 2008 was the year I started officialy have my first Massage Clients and other Therapeutic Activities like having a Shamanic Course done in New Carlisle, OH and many other clients and friend I could get at the time, giving me great experience !
In August 2008 I returned to Brazil because of my visa Status and for having achieved all that I needed at that time.

After arriving in Brazil and having a family business, around 2009 I started working with my family on the Marketing department, helping the company thrive and grow, developing all visual and the Communication of the Company. Internal and External.

Meanwhile, while working I kept doing many courses like Crystal Healing, Shamanic Healing, Flower Essences, Herbology, Ayurvedic Massage and many more, to keep up with my dream.

I started a relationship which gave me great basis and reasons to stay in Brazil but at the end of 2013 I was no longer with her and needed some new air again. This is where I came to United States around 2015 and started my whole process again, going to Columbus State Community College, and after getting better in English started working in Male SPA’s in Dublin, Ohio; got new clients to do home visits, worked in Hotels having my own personal clients and the hotel’s and more.

I could upgrade much of my style and techinique in Ohio, doing courses like Thai Yoga Massage, Cupping Therapy and improving while working in the SPA’s and clinics around Central Ohio.

Today I keep getting myself busy working and learning. Recently I got some certificates in Kinesio Taping and Dry Needling to help me improve my sessions and also to keep up with the Market and tendencies that have been happening lately worldwide.

Ohio is home and I have clients and friends that helped me through this process of improving and learning my style, way of working and habilities. And Im grateful for being able to help the Brazilian Community in Central Ohio and all the clients from the Community that comes to me seeking for some relieve. Thanks for this opportunity offered so I can share a bit of my history and experience !

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh yes, always a challenge to work with people, especially massage that is a very delicated form of treatment that requires knowledge, dedication and lots of love ! Especially being an immigrant trying to learn culture and the ways of the people around here. But we got it !

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think I said a lot in my history, but Im more especialized in Therapeutic Massages like Deep Tissue, Miofascial Release, Cupping Therapy, Hot Stones, Kinesiotaping, Thai Yoga Massage and now Dry Needling. Im known in Columbus for helpling people achive their goals in fitnesse or athletic carrer. Because Ive trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Columbus from 2017 to 2019 Ive gathered lots of experience with athletes and started to develop a style more related to recovery and maintanence of these athletes. And now with all the tool I have I feel confident to deliver a result most clients need or seek.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think risk taking is part of any Entrepreneur’s nature. Specially Massage Therapists or Natural healers. Some days you have just to believe in what youre feeling and quit that job that is taking your sleep away or is not offering ways to grow and then just follow your heart, start learning, getting certifications and throwing yourself out there, marketing, advertising to get clients slowly or even start with family and friends to get confidence and experience.

But definetly risk taking is part of the nature of being a Massage Therapist. Like a friend of mine always says, there is no guarantees. Just go and do it !
