Rising Stars: Meet DJ THA DJ of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ THA DJ.

Hi DJ THA DJ, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Honestly, I never really thought about becoming a DJ growing up\. Sports were always my first love and my main focus\. But I grew up in a home where music was always playing\. My parents listened to all types of music, especially old\-school rap and R&B, so music was always a big part of my life\.

I first became interested in DJing when I was around 16 years old\. I was riding with a friend that I consider a brother to one of his parties\. When we got there, I watched him DJ, interact with the crowd, and get everybody hyped\. Something about seeing how he controlled the energy in the room and brought people together through music instantly caught my attention\.

Literally after we left that party, I told him, “Yo, I want to be just like you\. I want to DJ\.” The very next day, he had me come over and started showing me the ropes\. That was really the beginning of my journey\.

At the time, though, I was still in high school and sports were my main focus, so I didn’t fully maximize the opportunity to DJ as much as I could have\. It wasn’t until I got to college that DJing really started taking off for me\.

My roommates and I wanted to throw a party, but we were new to the area and didn’t really know anyone\. Instead of finding a DJ, I already had my equipment with me, so I decided to DJ the party myself\. From there, we started throwing parties every week, and they quickly grew\. The parties became so popular that they were literally wall to wall, and it got to the point where people weren’t even going to the clubs around campus anymore—they were coming to our parties\.

Eventually, one of the local club promoters came to one of our parties and told us that we were bringing in so many people that he wanted to work with us\. He offered us a percentage to start bringing our parties to the club because we were taking so much of their crowd\.

That was really when I realized DJing was more than just something I enjoyed—it was something I had a real passion and talent for\. Since then, I’ve continued to grow, build my brand, and develop my craft\. What started as me watching someone I looked up to DJ at a party when I was 16 has turned into something I’m truly passionate about today

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. One of my biggest struggles was simply getting my name out there. I was in a different city for school and didn’t really know many people outside of the people on campus, so building connections and getting opportunities was challenging.

A lot of my friends and family back home didn’t even realize how serious I was about DJing at the time. They would see pictures or flyers that I posted on Facebook and Instagram, but they really didn’t know that I was consistently DJing and working to build a name for myself.

Things started to change once I got the opportunity to DJ in clubs regularly while I was in school. A few local promoters heard me DJ and liked what I brought to the events, which led to them booking me for some of the local city nights. From there, things really started to take off.

I began getting booked week after week and posting flyers nonstop. Eventually, the buzz started reaching back home, and people there began seeing what I was doing. That led to me getting booked to DJ in my hometown as well.

Looking back, the biggest challenge was getting myself in front of the right people and building my name in a place where I didn’t already have connections. But once I got the opportunity to showcase what I could do, the momentum started building from there.

What really sets me apart is my work ethic and grit. I’m the person who keeps going when others slow down, someone who finds a way to deliver and give an experience un like no other

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that’s been most important to my success as a DJ is a combination of grit and the ability to truly read a room. I put in the work ethic and consistency to build my skills and music knowledge, but what makes the difference on the night is sensing the crowd’s energy and adapting in real time so the set connects and keeps people moving
