Rising Stars: Meet Darien Pugh of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darien Pugh.

Hi Darien, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a Cincinnati independent artist in 2015, built my first audience through self-released music and local performance, used that momentum to pursue the industry in New York and Atlanta, and gradually evolved from recording artist into a songwriter/creative who develops records for myself and other artists.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I made the difficult decision to leave my hometown for Atlanta in 2018 to pursue bigger opportunities. That meant leaving behind friends, family, resources, and the familiarity of my local network. Moving to Atlanta was a major gamble filled with obstacles, trials and tribulations.

Leap of faith → local buzz → near-breakthrough → no deal → relocation → isolation → balancing work/life → repeated opportunities that didn’t always convert → reinvention → persistence → continued growth.

There won’t be anything “overnight” about my success story. I promise you that!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What makes my story interesting is that I didn’t remain strictly an “artist.” I’d describe himself as a singer, rapper and songwriter, who began spending significant time writing over producers’ instrumentals—creating songs that could either become my own releases or be submitted for other artists’ placements.

Over time, I’ve been recognized for my ability to create the song, write it for somebody else, develop the concept, record it, collaborate with producers, release my own material, and build value around the underlying composition.

I’d say that I’m most proud of this because I didn’t come from a record-label system—I’m a homegrown talent.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My parents planned a surprise birthday when I was just a kid. I remember walking in to every one screaming from family members, neighbors, my Dad & my brother while my Mom was behind me. I don’t remember a lot about my childhood but I remember that.
