Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Taylor.
Hi Matthew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing art for as long as I can remember, starting with graffiti and transferring in to tattooing when I got in to my first apprenticeship at a shop in New Mexico where im originally from at 16. I have tried some other career paths throughout the years but tattooing has been the one constant passion. I’m 34 now so that makes it 18 years give or take that I’ve been doing this.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Tattooing and art in and of itself isn’t a straightforward or easy (smooth) road, it took a long time to find my footing in all of it, as well as developing my own personal style and carving out a decent clientele for myself. The main struggles along the way I think would have just been finding a niche or more so making one and staying productive or creative when the going gets tough.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattooer in Newark, Ohio. I tell people I specialize in whatever walks in the door, but my preference and focus in tattooing as well as art is traditional Americana style designs as well as abstract/weird/funky stuff, still in the vein of American traditional tattooing.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor would be to find an artist you like their work and spend some time in their chair, develop a friendship, then maybe you’ll be offered it., I personally wont ever apprentice anyone because I feel like I still learn more everyday, and you can never be a good teacher while still being a student.
