Today we’d like to introduce you to Vernon Shelton.
Hi Vernon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My life started like a survival story—no background, no safety net, and enduring childhood abuse from relatives. I picked up martial arts back then for one simple reason: self-protection.
What started as a shield became my destiny.
Today, I’m a 3rd Degree BJJ Black Belt and have repeatedly stood on the world stage for Team USA—headlined by a dream season in 2023 where I took home three belts and gold medals.
I don’t look back at the hardship with bitterness, only gratitude. Today, I travel the world to train, explore, and live a life my younger self could have only dreamed of. I started out just trying to survive, but I ended up building a legacy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in my life came easy. Raised by a single mom who worked her heart out for my sister and me, money was always tight. By 12 years old, I was already out there hustling to help keep food on the table. Between that and dealing with early abuse from relatives, I picked up martial arts for one real reason: self-protection.
Turns out, that survival mode built my entire future
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Behind everything I do is a simple truth: I know what it’s like to start from nothing and fight for every inch. That’s why whether I’m behind a desk or on the mats, my goal is always to build things that last.
By day, I work as an estimator at The Estimates, a company I’ve been proud to call home for several years. I love the precision of the work, but my passion for building people runs just as deep as my career.
While holding down my permanent job, I’m known as Coach V to my students at the dojo. Teaching Jiu-Jitsu to both kids and adults—and guiding them through the fire of high-stakes tournaments like last year’s PANAM Competition in Panama—is one of the greatest privileges of my life.
To round out the hustle, I’m also a Certified Personal Trainer, working one-on-one with clients to help them transform their health, confidence, and overall quality of life.

I started out just trying to survive and protect myself, but today, I get to use everything I’ve learned to lift others up—whether that’s calculating project costs, coaching a student to gold, or helping a client reclaim their health. I’m deeply grateful for the journey, and I’m just getting started.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Personality I got growing up.
Battle-Tested Resilience: Forced to grow up at 12, you traded childhood comfort for pure hustle to support your family. Hardship didn’t make you bitter—it made you unbreakable. Protective Instinct: Facing early abuse made you hyper-aware, grounded, and fiercely protective of those you love. Quiet Discipline: You learned early that talk is cheap. Your focus, composure, and work ethic were forged in survival mode long before you ever stepped onto a competitive mat.
I am grateful to get involved with all the interest that life can offer.
Martial Arts & Combat: What started as a shield for self-defense quickly became your life’s core passion, sanctuary, and ultimate outlet for self-mastery. Fitness & Peak Performance: Fascinated by physical capability, you built a mindset around testing your limits, staying sharp, and mastering the human body. Problem-Solving & Strategy: From hustling for cash as a kid to analyzing project costs as an estimator, you’ve always loved numbers, structure, and solving hard puzzles.
