Life & Work with Sarah Crickard of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Crickard.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a reader and a writer for as long as I can remember, but I began to take my storytelling seriously in 2018, after my mother’s prompting got me to join the Catholic Writers Guild. There, I met mentors, friends, and people who worked in publishing. After years of practicing my craft and refining my voice, I pitched my debut novel to Chris Press, and the rest is history! These days, I’m finishing the second book in the series– a prequel, and I intend to partner with Chrism Press again when it’s ready.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In some ways it has, and in others it hasn’t. The only way to get better at something is to keep doing it. Logging hours of writing time on short stories and novels that I don’t plan to publish can look like a waste of time, but it was in those “wasted” hours that I learned from my mistakes, found better ways of telling the stories, and found my voice. If you love a craft, the difficulty won’t stop you from logging the hours until you’re proficient.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think that fiction has been relegated to a frivolous, escapist hobby instead of being recognized as a cultural force that changes hearts and forms minds. I think good fiction, and especially good Christian fiction, is needed. I hope my books will be a safe haven for people who need to unwind with a good book, but more so, I hope they leave my readers encouraged and thoughtful.

I have to plug the Catholic Writers Guild, which is at the front lines of the Catholic literary renaissance. My publisher, Chrism Press, is also an excellent company putting out a ton of great literature.
