Life & Work with Kalvin Owens of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalvin Owens.

Hi Kalvin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started off making EDM music freshman year of high school. I always rapped, but didn’t take it seriously until junior year of high school when one of my friends in class heard me reciting a poem and invited me over to make a rap song together. I did it in one take and haven’t looked back since. Each project Is like a chapter of my life. Each song fine tuned to a significant moments that took place over the course of time. Whether good or bad, happy or sad, there is a song for every emotion that life has to offer.

After 4 projects and 135 songs released in total, the one thing I’ve learned is that creativity doesn’t have a scheduled operating time. It just happens. This is a lesson I’ve taken to heart as I’ve finished my newest album COLORS, releasing everywhere October 20th!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Crafting each album is like writing a book in the Game of Thrones series. Time consuming, obsessively striving for perfection, and repeatedly running out of room in my notebook. These are a few of many challenges that a creative like me faces on a day to day basis. Why, without adversary the path to success isn’t as sweet.

In laymans, life is a terrible dealer and you never know which hand you will receive when you wake up. One day it’s all smiles and the next you are at a funeral because Mom passed away. Or the love of your life decides to break your heart in a million pieces after giving them multiple chances. You never know what life will throw at you. I just try to stay tapped in to the Universe and write accordingly.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a kid who grew up on the soulful sounds of Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye, I aim to effortlessly deliver introspective lyrics atop melodic production. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Childish Gambino, Juice WRLD, and Denzel Curry, I use clever rhyme schemes, and creative wordplay to bring melancholy subject matters to life. Not only do I pen my own lyrics, but also engineer all of the songs as well. Armed with an aggressive flow with melodic undertones, it is no wonder I’m known as the “Energetic Sadboy” by my friends.

I am most proud of multiple songs hitting over 1,000 streams as an independent artist, such as my song Signs that has over 31,000 streams. I am also very big on collaboration, so I am very proud of being able to be part of music collective called The STEW, and working with big artists such as Nate Fox, Westside Boogie, Yoshi Vintage, and Sean Oakley.
