Today we’d like to introduce you to Golpe De Estado.

Hi Golpe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Golpe de Estado started in Columbus, Ohio, with a simple idea: bring together a group of young musicians who loved Música Mexicana but also represented the generation they grew up in. With the help of our manager, Emmanuel Gonzalez, that idea began turning into something much bigger. Emmanuel took a chance on the project and helped develop the band from the ground up, bringing his extensive background in music and business along with an academic foundation from The Ohio State University, Berklee College of Music, and UCLA School of Law.

Being from Columbus has become an important part of our story. We aren’t from one of the traditional markets people immediately associate with Música Mexicana, so there wasn’t really a roadmap for us. From the beginning, we understood that if we wanted people to take the project seriously, we had to build it ourselves show by show, song by song, and city by city.

We started locally, playing wherever we could and developing our sound and chemistry onstage. Within our first year, we released our debut single, “Hipnotizado,” performed at Columbus’ Festival Latino, began traveling outside Ohio, and had opportunities to share stages with established artists in the regional Mexican scene.

Since then, Golpe de Estado has grown beyond being a local band, performing in cities including Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, and St. Louis, while continuing to build a strong following throughout Ohio and the Midwest. We’ve also focused heavily on developing our own music and identity, releasing projects and singles including “Piel Rosita,” “Mirando al Cielo,” and “Un Día Soñé.”

We recently celebrated our second anniversary, and although a lot has happened in a short amount of time, we still feel like we’re just getting started. Today, our focus is on releasing more original music, expanding into new markets, and continuing to build Golpe de Estado into a representation of a new generation of Música Mexicana coming from an unexpected place.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road for us. We originally came together as a band right before COVID under a different name. After a little over a year of trying to build the group, the pandemic brought everything to a complete standstill and left us uncertain about what the future of the band would look like.
About a year later, we decided we weren’t ready to give up on the idea. We reached back out to Emmanuel to see if he was still interested in helping us rebuild the project and give it another shot. Fortunately, he was. We came back with a new mindset, a new identity, and a new name: Golpe de Estado.
Since then, the story has been very different. There have still been challenges, especially building a Música Mexicana band from a smaller market like Columbus, but those early setbacks taught us to be patient, persistent, and willing to create our own opportunities. Looking back, starting over was probably one of the most important decisions we made.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are a band rooted in Regional Mexican music, a genre that is now more global than ever. We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come in just over two years, while we still consider ourselves a local band our mission is to continue to grow as artists and prove that big artists also come from unexpected places.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Be persistent and don’t give up easily. Put your head down and put in the work.
