Hidden Gems: Meet Toyia Montgomery of Good Vibes, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toyia Montgomery.

Hi Toyia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My last corporate stop was at the Kroger company leading Talent Attraction, Employment Branding and Vendor Partnerships. During the pandemic, I was challenged to leave my corporate job and develop a business that would help more people start and sustain businesses by providing consulting, media and brokerage services. Today I work with several small business clients and lead our business incubator program, The Pivot Project Ohio. The Pivot Project Ohio was established to prepare more small businesses to compete in the world we live in today. We help them “pivot” from what they may have done in the past to start using AI, Intergenerational Partnerships and Robotics to make their businesses more competitive for the future.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have faced a number of challenges as a small business owner but in my opinion, challenges help you become more resilient. After leaving my corporate role, I got a divorce from my husband of 14 years and had to put the pieces of my life back together while building a business to help others in the process. Everything I have gone through in my life has prepared me for where I am today. In 2011, I opened a coffee shop near the University of Cincinnati, after just two years in business, UC changed from quarters to semesters and our business plummeted. That experience prepared me to be a voice of reason for some of my small business owners, to let them know they have options in spite of how they might feel at the time. Life has a way of preparing you for what you are going to experience before you actually need it. Initially, I doubled my salary as a small business owner but when the political landscape changed, I lost $7,500 a month in contracts practically overnight. I am still recovering but it has taught me the importance of pivoting; which I can use to help my clients.

We’ve been impressed with Good Vibes, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Good Vibes, LLC manages the how, the what, the where and the why of small business entertainment and engagement. We serve as an extension of our client’s business as it relates to operations needs including Operations, Communications, HR and Marketing/Sales. When we meet with a client, we take the time to understand what their goals are and put together an actionable plan to help them achieve those goals in a reasonable amount of time. We introduce them to the proper resources and walk them through the processes needed to reach the finish line.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One of my favorite books lately is a book called, Cherish by Gary Thomas. I enjoy several podcasts, including Ex-conversations, my own podcast, “The Plug with Toyia T and several others about self help as I am introduced. I currently spend an unhealthy amount of time on TikTok.
