Hidden Gems: Meet Matthew Myro Rothman of EM2P2

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Myro Rothman.

Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into medical cannabis began during my second year of graduate school at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, when a doctoral student offered me a job as the third employee at her nursery, growing medical cannabis clones for local dispensaries.

That opportunity led to 15 years of entrepreneurship in California’s medical cannabis industry. As the state transitioned from medical-only to adult-use cannabis, I began looking for a new way to apply that experience. My father, a co-founder of EM2P2, brought me into the company as its medical cannabis expert, and today, as Chief Science Officer, I’m helping build the infrastructure necessary to integrate medical cannabis into the broader healthcare system.

My path to get here has been intentionally unconventional. I earned a master’s degree in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness, became a certified yoga instructor, personal trainer and high-performance coach, apprenticed under a tai chi master for two years, and became a Reiki Master and Teacher.

I’ve written and recorded an album of original music, produced and starred in an independent film, worked as a craft cocktail bartender, traveled to more than 30 countries, and pursued lifelong interests ranging from neuroscience, consciousness, contemplative traditions, and psychedelic science to music, fitness, technology, and the philosophy of science.

I’m a polymath by nature, endlessly curious about seemingly unrelated fields and especially interested in what happens when you start connecting them. That curiosity has ultimately become one of the most important tools I bring to my work today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been a smooth road at all! Fundraising challenges have meant going months and years without a paycheck.

When we started in 2018, the cannabis industry was making a major push toward adult-use (recreational), and many thought we were crazy for focusing exclusively on medical cannabis.

Those challenges persist today as cannabis moves toward Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act.

While this represents a significant step toward federal recognition of its medical value, much of the industry continues to approach cannabis primarily as a consumer product rather than a form of medicine.

We’ve had to remain committed to a vision that the broader industry is only beginning to embrace, and that requires a great deal of patience, persistence, and conviction

EM2P2 is a healthcare technology company building the infrastructure that connects patients, healthcare providers, insurers, and medical cannabis businesses.

Through our proprietary technology, CannaLnx, we’re creating pathways for insurance reimbursement, coordinated care, and greater patient access to an emerging category of medicine.

What sets us apart is that we’re not simply developing technology for an industry; we’re building the connections necessary to integrate that industry into the broader healthcare system. Our mission is to remove barriers to care and help create a more connected, accessible future for healthcare.

What are your plans for the future?
Our immediate focus is on expanding the Next Frontier Pipeline and making medical cannabis more accessible through traditional healthcare benefit programs.

Looking ahead, we’re keeping a close eye on psychedelic medicine and other emerging therapeutics that may face similar challenges integrating into the healthcare system.

Our long-term vision is to build infrastructure that can help bring innovative forms of medicine into mainstream healthcare, expanding patient access and creating new possibilities for treatment.
