Hidden Gems: Meet Ja’Nitta Marbury of Marbury & Associates LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Nitta Marbury.

Hi Ja’Nitta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in 2004 with what I can only describe as a leap of faith. I took a risk and signed a six-month lease, making a promise to myself: if I could help even one person during those six months, I would continue pursuing this calling. That decision became the foundation for what is now Marbury & Associates.

More than two decades later, that same commitment to helping people heal, grow, and recognize their own strength continues to guide my work. Over the years, my practice has evolved into a space centered on culturally sensitive, compassionate, and personalized mental health care. I’ve expanded my approach to include specialized services such as trauma-informed care, EMDR, Hypnotherapy, adolescent mental health services, caregiver support, and cultural and family support.

What started with a six-month lease and the hope of helping one person has grown into a much larger mission: creating a place where people can feel seen, heard, understood, and empowered to transform their lives. For me, “Welcome to the Couch” is more than a tagline—it represents an invitation to come as you are, have a seat, and begin the journey toward healing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Building a private practice required me to take a leap of faith, trust my vision, and continue moving forward even when I didn’t know exactly what the outcome would be.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is that being a good therapist and running a successful business require two very different skill sets. I had to learn how to balance my passion for helping people with the realities of building and sustaining a practice. There were moments of uncertainty, growing pains, and times when I had to adapt to changes within the mental health field while remaining committed to the people and communities I serve.

Another important part of my journey has been creating a space where people—particularly those who may not have always felt seen, understood, or represented in traditional mental health settings—can receive compassionate and culturally sensitive care. Staying true to that vision has remained important as the practice has grown.

The struggles along the way have ultimately helped shape both me and the practice. They taught me resilience, patience, flexibility, and the importance of continuing to evolve. More than two decades later, I can look back and appreciate that the difficult moments were just as important to the journey as the successes. They helped turn that original leap of faith into what “Welcome to the Couch” represents today: a space for healing, growth, connection, and transformation.

As you know, we’re big fans of Marbury & Associates LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Marbury & Associates, represented by the “Welcome to the Couch” brand, is a mental health practice grounded in the belief that everyone deserves a safe, supportive space to feel seen, heard, and understood while working toward their healthiest self.

With more than two decades of experience, I provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, individualized care. Services include individual and specialized counseling, trauma-informed approaches, EMDR, Hypnotherapy, and culturally competent services. The practice has also expanded to offer consulting, books, and culturally inspired therapy wear that extend messages of healing, empowerment, and connection beyond the therapy room.

What sets “Welcome to the Couch” apart is its approachable, personal, and inclusive identity. The couch symbolizes a place where people can come as they are, set down the emotional baggage they have been carrying, have honest conversations, and begin healing and growing. I am proud that the brand combines warmth and accessibility with professional experience and clinical expertise.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I believe strongly in being a lifelong learner. Working in mental health for more than two decades has taught me that I can never stop learning, growing, or challenging myself. I regularly turn to books, professional trainings, research, and other mental health resources that help me stay informed and continue developing both personally and professionally.

Books are especially important to me because they allow us to see ourselves and our experiences from different perspectives. One of the books I most often recommend to clients and require staff to read is “Breaking Free From The Victim Trap by, Diane Zimberoff. People gain new insights about their life, family of origin and the experiences that have lead them to my couch.

Finally, I try to practice what I encourage others to do: make space for reflection, protect my mental wellness, remain open to growth, and give myself permission to reset when necessary. For me, doing my best in life isn’t about having one perfect app, book, or routine. It’s about continuing to learn, grow, staying connected to my purpose, and being intentional about taking care of myself so that I can continue showing up for others.
