Hidden Gems: Meet Heidy Chu of The Little Dot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidy Chu.

Hi Heidy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in Hong Kong, where I grew up surrounded by vibrant culinary culture, before moving to the US to be close to my family.

As someone who lives in the neighborhood, the Worthington Farmers Market was always a favorite spot for my family to visit, and I fell in love with its warm community vibe.

Driven by a passion for baking, I launched my home bakery at the market a few years ago. I was initially unsure of how local customers would respond to Asian-inspired pastries, but I took the leap. Starting out was a steep learning curve—moving from early-morning kitchen panic to developing a smooth, week-long production routine. Over time, that steep learning process turned into an incredible routine, and sharing my flavor fusion with our neighborhood market community has been one of the most rewarding experiences

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth sailing! Running a home bakery means every day is a lesson in spatial math. My single biggest challenge is simply space—juggling limited counter space for shaping dough and squeezing enough refrigeration for cold-proofing and ingredients.
Then there’s the gear. A standard home oven can only do so much at once, so baking for market day requires meticulous timing and non-stop shifts. Figuring out when to push through with what I have versus when to bite the bullet and upgrade my tools is a constant balancing act. It’s a work in progress, but solving those daily puzzles is part of what keeps things interesting!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At The Little Dot, we specialize in Asian-inspired pastries that bring something a little different to the table. We’re best known for our light, airy textures and our “not too sweet” flavor profile—giving traditional bakes a thoughtful twist with items like cloud-like chiffon cakes, savory green onion cookies, and Asian-flavored brioche.
The heart of our brand is simple: we only sell what we truly love to eat ourselves. Every single item on our menu is something our family genuinely enjoys at home, so if it doesn’t make us happy, it doesn’t make the menu. Beyond our weekly setup at the farmers market, we also cater weddings, private parties, and special events. I’m just really proud to share these flavors with our community and show that great desserts don’t need to be heavy or overloaded with sugar to be memorable.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is community and staying true to our roots.
Moving back here to be close to my family reminded me just how special a tight-knit community is. Through baking, I get to share a piece of my heritage with our neighbors, introducing flavors that bring people real joy. I care deeply about quality over volume—every single treat that leaves my kitchen is made with the exact same care and love I put into baking for my own family. Knowing our pastries have become a small part of someone’s weekend market routine or family celebration is what makes all the early mornings worth it.
