Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Thokey.
Hi Chuck, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is probably a little different than most people in sales.
I didn’t grow up thinking I was going to become a sales trainer, speaker, or business owner. I actually started my career in aviation as a Flight Test Engineer for Bombardier Learjet in Wichita, Kansas. I loved airplanes, I loved the technical side of the job, and at the time, I thought that was probably going to be my career.
Then 9/11 happened, the aviation industry changed dramatically, and life pushed me in a completely different direction.
I moved back to Ohio and eventually found my way into sales. I started in the mortgage business, and that was really my first exposure to understanding how much communication, psychology, confidence, and human behavior matter when you’re trying to help somebody make a decision.
From there, I moved deeper into sales leadership, particularly in the home improvement industry. I spent years building teams, managing salespeople, training leaders, and figuring out why some reps consistently performed while others struggled.
What I learned was that most companies were managing the scoreboard instead of coaching the behaviors that created the scoreboard.
They would stare at close rates, revenue, and averages and tell people to “sell more,” but very few were actually teaching people what to do differently.
That became a huge part of my philosophy around what I call results-based leadership. You don’t really manage results. Results have already happened. You manage the activities, habits, conversations, and behaviors that produce those results.
Over the years, I became obsessed with studying sales conversations, emotional intelligence, body language, tonality, leadership, negotiation, and what actually causes someone to trust you enough to make a decision.
Eventually, that turned into TOP REP.
TOP REP started with a pretty simple idea: salespeople and sales leaders deserved better training than motivational speeches and a handful of clever closing lines.
We wanted to teach the entire game.
How you think. How you communicate. How you ask questions. How you read people. How you build trust. How you handle objections. How leaders coach. How companies onboard people. How you create consistency instead of hoping you hired another superstar.
Today, TOP REP works with companies and sales professionals throughout the United States and Canada. We coach owners, leaders, and sales teams, run large live bootcamps, build sales systems, and help companies create cultures where people can actually perform at a high level consistently.
And the funny part is, when I look back, the engineering background never really disappeared.
I think I still approach sales the same way an engineer approaches a problem.
Break it down. Figure out what’s actually happening. Find the variables that matter. Build a repeatable system. Test it. Improve it.
The difference is that instead of working on airplanes, now I’m working with people.
And people are a whole lot less predictable than airplanes.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions in business is that successful people somehow found the right path early and just kept climbing. That has not been my experience at all.
There have been plenty of wrong turns, bad hires, financial pressure, ideas that did not work, partnerships that were not the right fit, and seasons where I questioned whether I was building something sustainable or just creating a very expensive job for myself.
One of the hardest lessons for me was learning that being good at sales does not automatically make you good at building a business.
Those are two very different skill sets.
You can be a great salesperson and still struggle with leadership, operations, hiring, delegation, cash flow, accountability, and building systems that work without you standing in the middle of everything.
I had to learn that the hard way.
There were also times when I tried to move too fast. I would see the opportunity before the infrastructure was ready. That sounds exciting until you realize growth can expose every weakness in your business almost overnight.
If your communication is weak, growth exposes it.
If your leadership is weak, growth exposes it.
If your systems are weak, growth exposes it.
If you have the wrong people in the wrong seats, growth exposes that too.
And probably the biggest personal struggle was learning to let go.
When you are the founder, you naturally want to touch everything. You want to protect the brand. You want to make sure the client experience is right. You want to make every decision.
But eventually, that becomes the ceiling.
I had to learn that if I wanted TOP REP to become bigger than me, I had to build leaders, trust people, create systems, and stop being the answer to every problem.
There have also been moments where the market changed and we had to change with it. What worked two years ago does not always work today. You cannot fall in love with your own business model. You have to be willing to look at what is actually happening and adjust.
That has probably been one of the biggest themes of my career.
Every time I thought I had it all figured out, business had a pretty good way of reminding me that I did not.
But looking back, most of the things that felt like setbacks at the time ended up becoming some of the most valuable lessons.
They forced me to become a better leader, a better business owner, and honestly, a little less impressed with my own ideas.
That last one might have saved me the most money.
We’ve been impressed with TOP REP High Performance Sales Training , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TOP REP is a sales and leadership training company built around one idea: most sales problems are not actually sales problems.
They are training problems, leadership problems, communication problems, accountability problems, or process problems.
We specialize in helping companies, especially in the home improvement and home services industries, build stronger salespeople, stronger leaders, and more predictable performance.
What we are probably best known for is going much deeper than the typical sales training.
We do not just teach people a few rebuttals and send them back into the field hoping they remember them.
We teach the entire conversation.
That includes mindset, emotional intelligence, tonality, body language, questioning, objection handling, negotiation, closing, follow-up, leadership, onboarding, accountability, and the systems behind consistent performance.
We work with individual sales professionals, sales leaders, owners, and full organizations through coaching, live events, bootcamps, virtual training, sales management support, and ongoing membership programs.
One of the biggest things that sets us apart is that we are very practical.
Everything we teach has to survive in the real world.
If it sounds great on a stage but falls apart when a homeowner says, “I need to think about it,” we are not interested in it.
We spend a lot of time studying what actually happens inside sales conversations. Why people hesitate. Why reps lose control. Why leaders struggle to coach. Why companies have one or two superstars but cannot consistently develop the rest of the team.
Then we build systems around those problems.
Another big differentiator is that we do not believe great sales performance should depend on finding some mythical “natural born closer.”
That is one of the biggest lessons I have learned over the years.
The right attitude, behaviors, communication skills, and consistency can outperform raw talent over time.
Our job is to help companies build that into their culture.
Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is that TOP REP has become known for being intense, practical, and honest.
We care a lot about performance, but we care just as much about the people behind the numbers.
One of our core beliefs is Love, Serve, Care.
That might sound unusual in a sales organization, but it is actually at the center of everything we teach.
If you truly understand people, serve them well, and care about the outcome, you can still be direct, confident, and very good at selling without becoming the stereotypical pushy salesperson.
That is really what we want the TOP REP brand to represent.
High performance without losing the human side of the business.
At the end of the day, we are not just trying to help somebody close one more deal.
We are trying to help companies build people who can perform at a high level consistently, lead others well, communicate better, and create businesses that are not dependent on luck or one superstar salesperson.
That is the part I am probably most proud of.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are a lot of people who deserve credit.
I have been fortunate to have some incredible mentors, teammates, clients, partners, and friends who have helped shape both me and TOP REP along the way.
One of the biggest mentors in my career was Tony Hoty.
Tony taught me a tremendous amount about marketing, events, positioning, and how to think differently about business. He has always been one of those people who can see around corners before everyone else does. When Tony talks, I listen, because there is usually something in there that challenges the way I am thinking.
I have also been incredibly fortunate with the team around me at TOP REP.
You can have a vision, but without the right people helping execute it, it is just an idea.
People like Christina, Ashlee, Mike, Jet, and the rest of our team have played a major role in helping TOP REP grow from something centered around me into a real organization. They have challenged me, pushed back on me when needed, helped build systems, taken ownership, and helped make the company better.
That matters a lot to me.
I am also extremely grateful for our clients.
Some of our best ideas, programs, and training have come from working directly with companies that were willing to let us inside their business and show us what was really happening.
Our clients have trusted us with their teams, their leaders, and in many cases, the future of their sales organizations. That is a responsibility we take seriously.
We have also been fortunate to have great industry partners, including organizations like Owens Corning, who have believed in what we do and helped put us in front of companies and sales professionals across the country.
And then there are the people behind the scenes.
Friends, family, supporters, people who encouraged me when things were going well, and probably more importantly, people who stayed close when things were not going well.
Those people do not always get mentioned when somebody tells their success story, but they should.
The older I get, the more I realize that success is rarely about one person being brilliant.
It is usually a bunch of people believing in something, contributing in different ways, challenging each other, and staying in the fight long enough to build something meaningful.
I get a lot of visibility because I am on the stage or in front of the camera, but TOP REP has never been a one-person story.
A lot of people helped build this thing, and I am genuinely proud of that.
