Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Haley.

Linda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Having worked in the traditional Western medical field for many years, I only relied on pharmaceuticals and surgery when I was faced with a challenging diagnosis. When those options failed me and I became sicker, the natural therapies I later discovered created a successful path to wellness. It was then that I realized that too few people are aware of the benefits of non-medical care. In 2004, The Reiki Center, a comprehensive wellness center for people and pets, was created to provide natural healing options for our community. Today, the Center is the largest wellness center in Ohio.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest hurdle continues to be educating the general public about the benefits of natural therapies which are designed to complement your medical care, not replace it. This has been especially challenging, considering that limited insurance coverage is available and most holistic treatments are out of pocket. Other roadblocks have included cultural or religious beliefs, and a perception that services are primarily a placebo. These misconceptions often overlook the fact that there is a significant body of studies validating the effectiveness of therapeutic bodywork, energy healing services and other natural therapies.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Reiki Center?
The Reiki Center is one of the few centers in the United States that practices and teaches Reiki in the original Japanese protocol for spiritual and physical wellness. Most of the United States offers Reiki training and services through the streamlined version that was developed after the attack on Pearl Harbor led to widespread anti-Japanese sentiment. The premise is that our energy can be depleted or impacted by stress and illness, leading to decreased emotional and physical wellbeing. Receiving healing energy from a skilled practitioner assists in replenishing our energetic reserves, strengthening our physical and emotional health. The Japanese format for our Reiki classes emphasizes the importance of self-care, honoring the needs of your own body and soul.

But we offer far more than Reiki. Today the Center’s 30 practitioners and therapists offer more than 100 treatment modalities, focusing on therapeutic bodywork, spiritual and intuitive guidance, heart-centered healing, animal services, and energy healing techniques. A comprehensive calendar of professional and personal development classes offers a wide selection of short- and long-term training and relaxation opportunities. And Stone Soup Project, the center’s nonprofit agency,
provides free wellness services throughout Central Ohio in partnership with area social service agencies.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
In the beginning, in my eagerness to help people, I was not aware of all that would be required to create a successful business. Countless roadblocks and missteps in our early years makes me now appreciate how valuable it is to surround yourself with capable and committed partners.
