Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Slack.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love of art goes all the way back to childhood, but to save everyone some time, I’ll fast-forward to high school. That’s when my art teacher recognized my natural artistic talent and encouraged me to continue pursuing it. After loving art class all through high school, I decided to minor in Studio Art at The Ohio State University alongside my business degree. I specialized in painting and drawing, which ultimately helped land me where I am today.
Since college, I’ve had my ups and downs when it comes to balancing creating art with building my career in business. Now, in 2026, I come home from my 9-to-5 and focus on my 5-to-9: MacPherson Mural Co. I take a lot of pride in running my own art business, but more than anything, I find so much joy in it.
Over the last year, I’ve started expanding my focus beyond the Cleveland area and turning to social media to share my work with a wider audience. I hope to eventually gain traction across the country, and maybe even ship my work all over the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My main struggle when it comes to art is simply finding the time to do it. I’m constantly trying to balance my career, my natural urge to be social, maintaining friendships, traveling, and just doing normal late-twenties things. When I’ve had a week where I haven’t been able to focus on my art business at all, I can feel that itch start to grow, reminding me that I need to make time for my creativity again.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in commission art of all kinds, which I think makes me a little different from other artists out there. Focusing on commissions means that every piece I create can be drastically different from the last. Sometimes I’m painting an abstract piece for a therapist’s office, and other times I’m painting, sanding, and sealing cornhole boards for a family wedding. I also love taking on large-scale projects, especially murals, and transforming both commercial and residential spaces into something completely unique. By not limiting myself to one specific type of art, I’m able to experiment, try new things, and continuously challenge myself based on what my clients are looking for. Although the subject matter and type of art I create can vary quite a bit, I mainly work with acrylic paint and different forms of digital art.
