Today we’d like to introduce you to SALIM KHAN.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My Life Story – Salim Khan
Hello, my name is Salim Khan, and I am 30 years old. I am a seafarer by profession, and working in the Merchant Navy has been my dream since the beginning.
I completed my 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, followed by my graduation. I always wanted to work on ships, but back in 2016–2017, I had very little knowledge about how to enter the Merchant Navy. Unfortunately, I even became a victim of fraud through a college offering maritime courses. However, I never gave up on my dream.
After a lot of research, I received the right guidance from one of my father’s friends. In January 2018, I completed my GP Rating course at a reputed maritime college. Through campus placement, I was selected by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management. After waiting for almost a year, I joined my first ship on 24 June 2019. I still remember that day because I was incredibly happy. I was finally living my dream.
I worked on five ships with Anglo-Eastern, completing contracts of approximately nine months each. Through hard work and dedication, I progressed from Trainee Seafarer to Ordinary Seaman and then to Able Seafarer. By December 2024, I had gained valuable experience and improved my financial situation.
In November 2023, I got married, and later, I was blessed with a baby boy. I also achieved another important milestone by purchasing property for my family. These achievements mean a lot to me because I know how much struggle it took to reach this stage in life.
In 2025, I joined MOL Maritime Global Ship Management, where I am currently working. Over the years, my profession has given me much more than financial stability. It has allowed me to travel to many countries across the USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia, experience different cultures, and grow both personally and professionally.
Today, I have completed seven years in my seafaring career, and my next goal is to become a deck officer. I plan to go to the UK to prepare for and appear in my Second Mate examinations, and Inshallah, I aim to become an officer by 2028.
My journey has not always been easy, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. I believe that success comes through patience, hard work, continuous learning, and never giving up on your dreams.
Finally, I would like to say to everyone: Never give up on your dreams, no matter how difficult the journey becomes. Keep working hard, believe in yourself, and one day, your dream will become your reality.
Thank you.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My Struggle and Journey to Success – Salim Khan
My journey to the Merchant Navy was not easy. It was a dream that I carried in my heart, but in the beginning, I had very little knowledge about how to enter this industry.
Back in 2016–2017, there was limited information available on social media compared to today. I tried my best to find the right path, but unfortunately, I became a victim of fraud through a college offering maritime courses. It was a very difficult experience, but I refused to let that incident destroy my dream.
Instead of giving up, I started researching more and trying to understand the industry properly. Eventually, with the right guidance from one of my father’s friends, I found a genuine path forward. In January 2018, I completed my GP Rating course from a reputed college and got selected by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management.
However, getting selected was only the beginning. I had to wait almost one year before joining my first ship. Waiting for that opportunity was not easy, but I remained patient and kept believing in myself. Finally, on 24 June 2019, I joined my first ship. That was one of the happiest days of my life because I was finally living my dream.
Life at sea brought its own challenges. Being away from home, spending months onboard, and missing important family moments were never easy. But I accepted these sacrifices because I knew I was working towards a better future for myself and my family.
Through hard work, patience, and dedication, I progressed from Trainee Seafarer to Ordinary Seaman and then to Able Seafarer. I improved my financial situation, got married in November 2023, welcomed my baby boy, and purchased property for my family. Every achievement reminds me of the difficult journey I went through to reach this stage.
Today, I am still working towards my next big dream: becoming a deck officer. My journey is not over yet, and I know there are more challenges ahead. But the difference is that now I have experience, confidence, and a stronger belief in myself.
My biggest lesson in life is that failure is not the end of your journey. Sometimes, the hardest experiences teach you the most valuable lessons. No matter how many times life tests you, never give up on yourself. Keep learning, keep working hard, and keep moving forward.
If I can turn my struggles into achievements, I believe others can do the same. Your background does not define your future; your determination and hard work can help shape it.
Thank you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Merchant Navy is not just a job for me; it is my passion and my dream. I love the life at sea, exploring different countries, experiencing new cultures, and facing new challenges every day. Although staying away from family for months is difficult, my love for this profession keeps me motivated. The sea has taught me discipline, patience, responsibility, and the value of hard work. I feel proud to be a seafarer, and I am determined to continue growing in this profession and achieve my dream of becoming a deck officer. For me, the Merchant Navy is not just a career; it is a part of who I am.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to everyone who wants to join the Merchant Navy is to follow your dream, but always choose the right path. Do proper research, join a reputed maritime college, and never trust anyone who promises you a job in exchange for money. This profession offers great opportunities, but it also requires hard work, discipline, patience, and sacrifices. Be mentally prepared to stay away from your family for months and keep learning at every stage of your career. Remember, success does not come overnight, but with dedication, honesty, and determination, you can achieve your goals. Never give up on your dreams!
