Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Wong.
Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, I am Brandon Wong, Founder and CEO of BW Hockey, with 10 years of experience in coaching and consulting.
My journey—from street hockey, the Victoria Racquet Club, 4 years of junior hockey, 50 goals and leading the BCHL in scoring to earning a full athletic scholarship at Quinnipiac University, scoring 27 goals and becoming an all american, and hobey baker nominee in my first year and playing hockey for 27 years, What a journey! Playing in some elite levels across North America, Europe, Russia and China, to becoming an entrepreneur—shaped a simple vision: to create the opportunities for young athletes that I wish I had growing up to grow and
BW Hockey is about more than hockey training. It’s about creating an environment where young athletes can develop their skills, build confidence, learn from coaches & mentors who have already walked the path, and see what’s possible for their own future.
It started in 2017, when arriving back home from playing in China for the KHL/VHL Kunlun Red Star. Players like Alex, who I began training at 12 years old while he was striving to improve as a single child looking for mentorship. Alex eventually reached the CSSHL with St. Georges Academy and later chose rugby, going on to play and represent on Team Canada U20. Next was Coen, Terran and a few friends in the 2009 age grouping where we worked on a lot of on-ice skills, off-ice skills and dryland training.
His journey reminds me why I do this: development isn’t about deciding how far a young athlete can go. It’s about giving them the tools, opportunities and belief to discover it for themselves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some parts yes, some parts have been challenging—and I think both have special parts of the story.
There have been a lot of wins, and successes–kids, families, programming, coaches, and there have been plenty of challenges! As I have continued to move ahead, you learn who is supporting you, who is believing in you, and who is using you! A time where you find out who your real friends are, pretty quick. Transitioning from being an athlete to becoming an entrepreneur was a completely different challenge. As an athlete, you know what you’re working toward, and the challenges you have to face and perform. As an entrepreneur, you have to create the vision, build the team, make the decisions and take action.
COVID was obviously one of the biggest challenges. Hockey stopped, programs were postponed, and our normal way of developing players disappeared overnight. I had to adapt quickly, which is when I started meeting with friends, teammates, coaches and started an unofficial podcast and created an online hockey homework program to keep players engaged and developing.
There have also been the everyday challenges of building a business—learning as I go, making mistakes, dealing with pressure, managing people, and learning that you can’t do everything yourself.
But I’ve learned to embrace those challenges. Every setback has forced me to become better, think differently and keep moving forward.
I think that’s one of the biggest lessons from my hockey career that I’ve carried into business: you’re going to get knocked down or feel stuck. The question is whether you’re willing to get back up, learn from it and keep going.
The road has been challenging but I wouldn’t change that. Those challenges have shaped me into the coach, entrepreneur and leader I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is focused on player development, mentorship and creating opportunities for young athletes through BW Hockey. I specialize in developing not only better hockey players, but confident athletes and people. The beauty of it, is I was able to hire my close friends, old teammates, coaches and players I played against to mentor the kids, and it continued to rapidly evolve.
What sets me apart is my work ethic and my ability to connect with kids. I put in a lot of extra hours behind the scenes—often working from home until 6 or 7pm and sometimes will get back to it after dinner time to 10 or 11 p.m.—working on new programs, planning or building programs, communicating with families and constantly looking for ways to improve.
I believe you have to understand the person before you can truly coach the player. Every kid is different, and building that trust and connection allows me to reach them in a way that goes beyond hockey.
What I’m most proud of is seeing the impact that connection can have—watching players gain confidence, overcome challenges and believe in themselves.
For me, it’s not just about teaching hockey. It’s about helping young athletes discover what they’re capable of.
We offer many programs, skill sessions, hockey camps, spring teams, consulting and we are currently about to offer our 3 tier online platform. Our Tier 1, 1 ON 1 C&C (Coaching & Consulting Mentorship), and Tier 3, Online Community have launched. We will be launching our Tier 2, Semi Private Class C&C in the coming month. Look out for more details, this will be a valuable program for young athletes to goal set, set an action plan, meet with coaches, guest speakers and review gameplay.
What does success mean to you?
I define success pretty simply: work hard, be happy and enjoy the journey.
I want to wake up every day and genuinely enjoy what I’m doing. A big part of that for me is the people I meet and surround myself with—good-quality people who I can have great conversations with, learn from and grow alongside. The people who support and the people who mentor us are truly special.
I also think success is about being willing to be different and not following the traditional path. I’m fortunate to be building a second career in hockey, and I’m enjoying every part of that journey.
For me, success is about working hard, continuing to learn, enjoying the people around you and being proud of the life you’re building. The results and success will follow as you enjoy your work that you do, and helping others reach their goals and dreams.
