Conversations with Rue (Mirue) Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rue (Mirue) Miller.

Rue, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since I was very little, I was always entranced by music. My dad used to have an in-home music studio back in the day, and I remember watching him make beats or create songs. I always thought, “wow, I want to do that one day.” Growing up, the stage always had a way of calling me, whether it was through theatre, acting, dance, violin, modeling, I always found a way to be on a stage. I would write songs in my school notebooks and search for free beats on YouTube. Sometimes, I’d record myself on my sister’s phone or play around with different free music apps and websites. Though I’ve always made music, (since I could speak, really) I didn’t release my first song publicly until May 2025.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road I’m currently walking on to become a better artist hasn’t necessarily been hard, it was moreso full of pauses rather than rocks and debris. As an independent and fairly broke artist, I’ve struggled with having the funds to create the music I want to make with the quality I want. On top of that, I often struggle with creativity blocks. Sometimes I can go weeks without touching a pen, without listening to a beat, and those weeks would be some of the most challenging for me. When things get hard, I try to create music. When creating music becomes hard, I often pause and give myself time to mentally recuperate. It’s weird because somedays I can hear a beat and write a full song in 30 minutes, other days, I can’t even pick up a pen. So motivation is definitely one of the hardships I deal with, it’s not that I’m unmotivated, it’s really because I’m usually overwhelmed when I have a lot of stress and my one method of stress relief, sometimes gives me more stress. Lol.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to say I do everything creative, but simply put, I make music! I’m a rapper and songwriter, mainly known in Columbus from the fashion scene as a model. I think my background in modeling and acting is what separates me from other artists. I’m able to feel safe on a stage in front of a lot of people, I can handle the anxiety of performing a lot better because of this. I’m also a 5’4 black girl with angry rap music that usually shocks people when they first hear it. People always expect me to be a singer, and then I shock them when I perform “Stick Up,” my most vulgar, unfiltered song.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think goodluck is always on my side. I have my stressors and anxieties just like any other creative, but I think I got lucky enough to be able to post my music and share it with people on a whim. I didn’t write out a layout of how I wanted to market everything, I always just post my music on a whim. I posted my song Stick Up randomly on TikTok, not thinking anything of it. At the time it only had like 5 streams (and they were mostly from my mom and older brother) and then a few days later, boom, I have a ton of strangers listening to my song, praising me, and here I was having imposter syndrome. Luck is definitely on my side, all those beautiful strangers could’ve hated my song and bullied me off the internet, but instead, they stayed and showed love. Now they show up to my shows, listen to my music, and I always try to find ways to thank them for giving me a chance.
