Conversations with Monique Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Ward.

Monique, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an entrepreneur, radio personality, journalist, and businesswoman originally from Brooklyn, New York. At 18 years old, I moved to Toledo, Ohio, where I immediately recognized a void in the urban arts and entertainment community. Seeing an opportunity to create a platform for local talent, I founded Pozativ ProMotions, LLC, which began managing and showcasing talented youth and adults throughout the city.

For 15 years, I worked as a freelance journalist for The Sojourner’s Truth Newspaper, covering local news and issues within the African-American community. During my time there, I had the opportunity to interview notable celebrities, including D.L. Hughley. I also served as the Style Sense columnist for The Toledo City Paper, where I highlighted some of the city’s most fashionable and influential personalities.

From 2017 to 2021, I hosted my own radio show, In The Hot Seat With Monique, which aired on 92.5 KISS FM. Following the conclusion of that show, in 2024, I was presented with the opportunity to create the Soul of the Glass City Podcast on WGTE. The podcast allowed me to continue sharing stories, highlighting voices within the community, and connecting with audiences across multiple platforms. Soul of the Glass City aired across major streaming platforms, including NPR.

Throughout my career, I have remained committed to using media, entertainment, and entrepreneurship to uplift my community, create opportunities, and give talented individuals a platform to be seen and heard.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of being an entrepreneur while being a single mother hasn’t always been the easiest. After separating from my partner in my early twenties, I raised 3 children while building my business. It was hard at times, but what inspired me was my children watching me as I operated my business and did work in the communities where we lived. Fast forward to today: after a marriage and divorce, my older children are successful and grown, but now I have a first-grader that I am raising while still being a woman in the corporate and entrepreneurial world.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ultimately, I see myself as a connector and a catalyst. I connect people to people, stories to audiences, talent to opportunity, and communities to the resources and recognition they deserve. My goal has never simply been to build a career for myself. My goal has been to use every platform I receive to create space for someone else.

What I am most proud of is not one particular title, interview, event, company, or media platform. I’m most proud of the doors that I have helped open for other people. From my earliest days promoting talent through events like fashion and talent shows, curating music videos and art shows in Toledo to my most recent work interviewing and highlighting people through the Soul of the Glass City podcast, I have continually looked for the next person whose story deserves to be heard.

I also believe my greatest strength is recognizing potential before everyone else sees it. Years ago, I described Toledo as a city filled with talented and creative people waiting to exercise their full potential. That belief has continued to guide my work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Everyone has always said to me, “You’re so lucky,” when I end up in the places, situations, and spaces that many wish or could only dream of being in. I take that as a compliment because, to me, that is saying that I make it look easy, when really it took a lot of hard work and struggle to get there.
