Today we’d like to introduce you to Jibril Thomas.
Hi Jibril, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My upbringing with music was shaky. I found music at an early age (about 8-9 years old), and I gradually picked up on the symbolism in each song. Love songs weren’t about significant others, it was displayed as loving LIFE in itself. The most grooviest songs held meaning and importance unimaginable to a normal listening ear. My mom loved old school RnB, and as a rebellious child, I listened to everything I wasn’t supposed to. Amongst the “drill” and “gangster” rap, I found clarity in artists like J. Cole, Chance the Rapper, and many more. I would say I’ve always been one to question philosophical or societal nature. I’ve always believed deep down we all want to achieve the same goal; freedom. Whether it be financial freedom or the freedom to be ones’ self.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There are a lot of ups and downs when it comes to being a music artist. The writers block is real. Sometimes you have this great idea but no idea how you want to proceed. Two of my biggest things is managing my actual job and carving out time for my dreams. Most days I’m completely drained and lack the energy to pursue my dreams. But, mental health is the biggest thing. Probably said over and over again, but truly take care of yourselves. The most intuitive minds are usually the ones dealing with the most so remember to take care of you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Music Artist by the name of J Omen in Cincinnati, Ohio. I create music to reflect peoples’ views and perspective in a broader prospective in a world where understanding one another is slim to none. At the end of the day, we all just want to be as old as we can be and enjoy the life given to us. I can say I’m most proud of myself for sticking my head out to speak on something that’s bigger than me where many have also done. I wouldn’t say anything sets me apart from others because music is a form of expression that’s interpreted in many forms. What sets me apart is my own individual drive and passion.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I can’t specifically say one person had a massive impact on my success. Everyone I know played a great role in developing me and my art. I obviously owe my producers and engineers a great deal. Without the hard work and talent they bring, my music would never touch the people.
