Conversations with Haylie Scheben

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haylie Scheben.

Hi Haylie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started tattooing in my mom’s garage and in my bedroom with a rotary tattoo machine that I had gotten off of Amazon when I was 15. I struggled alot with mental health growing up and one of my first tattoos was a semi-colon tattoo for suicide prevention. I had a really upsetting situation happen when I was 16 and had begged my mom and dad to take me to get a piercing or a tattoo to help deal with the mental pain I was going through and to help me not self harm. My dad took me to go get a tattoo and I left when a new tattoo and a tattoo apprenticeship!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was very lucky with the way my journey went. My first mentor took me on at 16 years old! I was still in school but had switched to being homeschooled and was working a 9-5 Monday- Friday job at the time while doing my apprenticeship!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Tattoo Artist. I specialize in fine-line, traditional, small scale realism, large floral, and so much more. I’m most proud of the progress I’ve made in the past 4 years of tattooing and how far I’ve come as an artist and business owner! I feel like what sets me apart from others is always being my authentic self and bonding with everyone of my clients and being as honest as I can.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice is to go in with confidence when looking for an apprenticeship and meeting a possible mentor. Always be yourself as well that’s what attracts clients and good coworkers/ friends. A huge part of being an artist is word of mouth, so make sure to treat everyone with kindness and respect. When I first started out a big thing that helped me was creating flash sheets, posting my open availability and creating deals!
