Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Goins Robinson.
Hi Caleb, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started braiding my own hair my freshmen year of high school. My sister taught me because she said I wanted my hair braided to often. So I learned doing stuff to my own hair. And after high school and explore my life I started doing other hair styles on myself and a few of homegirls and ex high school girlfriend. And it led me to hair school and everything else has been in Gods hands.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is never easy. My first road blocks was the constant discrimination I endured with Ohio state school of cosmetology. I would endure depression and mental warfare. I was being judged for my identity and now enough acknowledgement for my skills and learning. Once I obtain my licensed, some jobs again was discriminating due to me being a male. And then there are the issue of clients wanting to leave because of price increases or finding others stylist and many return for you to fix the work of going to some cheaper/etc.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When it comes to drag what I’m most proud of is my start. I started on my 23rd birthday Aug 2008. Was to be a one time challenge that’s become an 18 year career. Yet in my starting I met and was introduced to a person who became my mentor and drag godfather. They took me on the road for national tours, even before my one year drag anniversary they invited me to obtain a passport and go perform at Toronto Canada pride. It all was a whirlwind of excitement that doing drag art could lead to such a reality. I started a year before Drag Race was on tv. I never saw drag opportunities like that for local artist not unless was doing a national or international reign. Or you knew folk to book you and travel. So to achieve local, national and international opportunities within one beginning year of drag real set up my success. All thanks to my mentee Luster Dela Virgion.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
