Community Highlights: Meet Shelby Parton of HealthMarkets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Parton.

Hi Shelby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a meaningful impact in my community, though I was not always certain what form that would take. Over the years, I explored several career paths, including the military and medicine, before earning my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.

As a student, I often had to work harder than my peers due to my unique learning style. Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges many children face and inspired me to pursue a career in education. I believed that becoming a teacher would allow me to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

After meeting my husband, Alex, in my hometown of North Canton, Ohio, I relocated to the Toledo area and began teaching with Regina Coeli. Teaching was incredibly rewarding, and I cherished the opportunity to help and guide my students. However, after a couple of years, I felt called to explore a different path where I could continue serving and educating others in a new capacity.

I then spent a couple of years as an Administrative Assistant with Aflac, where I gained valuable professional experience. While I enjoyed the role, I continued to feel drawn toward a career that would allow me to have a more direct impact on people’s lives.

In August 2019, I joined the HealthMarkets team at my husband’s uncle’s storefront in Maumee. Since then, I have had the privilege of helping countless individuals and families navigate their health insurance options. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the opportunity to educate clients and empower them to make informed decisions about their coverage. Helping people find solutions that meet their needs continues to be the driving force behind my career and my commitment to serving the community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While the journey was not always easy, building a business in today’s ever-changing economy required perseverance, adaptability, and a strong work ethic. I understood that success would take time and dedication, and I remained committed to putting in the work necessary to build a career centered on serving others. Since joining the industry in 2019, I have never looked back.

Like many self-employed professionals, the early years came with challenges, particularly while supporting a family. I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of my husband, whose encouragement and belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue this career path and grow my business.

In June 2023, I proudly opened my storefront in Sylvania, Ohio. Having a local office has allowed me to better serve my clients and strengthen my connections within the community. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help individuals and families navigate important healthcare decisions every day.
