Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Brown.
Hi Mercedes, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story really started with beauty, but it was rooted in something much deeper.
There was a time in my life when I learned how to hide behind beauty. If I looked good on the outside, people wouldn’t know that I was secretly struggling on the inside. Hair, makeup, and looking put together became a way for me to feel confident, but also, in some ways, to hide what I was going through.
Over time, I realized I wasn’t the only woman doing that. So many women were putting on a beautiful exterior while quietly dealing with anxiety, depression, and things no one else could see. That realization became the vision for my business.
I set out to create a boutique where women could come in and get what they needed to look amazing on the outside (earrings, hair extensions, cosmetics), but also find something deeper……community, friendship, faith in Jesus, encouragement, and a place where they could simply be themselves.
That’s why Mercedes Brown Hair Boutique has grown beyond selling hair. Through our in-store groups, events, and community initiatives, we create spaces where women can connect and focus on the beauty that comes from within. I want women to leave not only feeling good about how they look, but feeling encouraged, confident, supported, and reminded of their worth.
Today, I describe Mercedes Brown as a hair boutique with purpose. Beauty is what may bring a woman through the door, but I want the community, the relationships, and the confidence we build from the inside out to be what keeps her connected.
And I truly believe I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. It has been a beautiful journey, but it has not been a smooth one.
One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to keep going when I couldn’t see the full picture. There have been moments when I questioned myself, my business, and whether I was really capable of building the vision I had in my head. Entrepreneurship can be lonely, and there have been times when I’ve had to make difficult decisions, take risks, and figure things out as I went.
I’ve also had to learn that growth doesn’t always look the way you expect it to. There have been setbacks, disappointments, and opportunities that didn’t work out the way I hoped. But looking back, I can see that some of those moments were necessary because they pushed me to become a better business owner and, honestly, a stronger woman.
I think one of my biggest lessons has been understanding that I can’t separate the business from the person I’m becoming. Mercedes Brown has challenged me to grow in confidence, leadership, patience, and faith.
So no, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. But I’m grateful for the hard parts because they’ve shaped the business into what it is today. The challenges taught me how to keep showing up, even when things weren’t perfect, and that’s something I hope other women can see in my story too.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mercedes Brown – The Hair Boutique with Purpose?
Mercedes Brown The Hair Boutique with Purpose is a luxury hair boutique. We sell premium wigs, hair extensions, hair oils, and accessories, but what we offer goes far beyond the products themselves.
I would say that a lot of businesses in this industry are transactional. We’re relational. I don’t want a woman to walk into my boutique, make a purchase, and walk out feeling like she was simply a customer. I want her to feel like she was welcomed into a community.
That philosophy comes directly from my own story. I created Mercedes Brown after realizing how easy it is for women to look beautiful on the outside while struggling on the inside. I wanted to create a space where women could take care of their outward beauty while also having opportunities to grow, connect, build friendships, explore their faith, and talk about the things that really matter.
That’s why our in-store groups, events, and community initiatives are such an important part of the brand. We’re creating experiences and relationships, not just selling products.
Of course, we take pride in offering quality hair, beautiful products, and a luxury experience. But what I’m most proud of is the community that has grown around the brand. It’s more than retail. It’s a ministry. I’m proud when women tell me they came for the hair but stayed because of the relationships they built. One of our most popular in store groups is called “A Seat At The Table”. In just one year, this bible study group grew from just one member showing up to over 140 women connected in person and online who meet in our store on Wednesdays. We also giveaway free wigs to women who’ve suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment. Our mission is to continue to give back and create community space for women in need of support.
I’m especially proud of our recent partnership with the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s one of those moments that makes me stop and really appreciate how far this business has come. What started as a vision has grown into an opportunity to partner with one of Cincinnati’s most iconic organizations. It’s a huge milestone for Mercedes Brown, but more than that, it represents what can happen when you stay committed to your vision, build genuine relationships, and trust God to open the right doors at the right time.
At the end of the day, hair is what we sell, but confidence, connection, and community are what we’re really building.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve learned that mentorship and networking are really about relationships, not just connections. And for me personally, my faith in God has played a huge role in that.
I’ve learned to trust God to connect the right dots. Flat out. There have been so many times in my journey when I’ve met someone, had a conversation, or walked into a room and didn’t immediately understand why I was there. Later, I could see how that relationship or opportunity connected to something else. Learning to trust that God is leading every step I take, in stead of trying force every connection has been a game changer for me.
My advice is to genuinely get to know people and be willing to give before you ask for something in return. Some of the most meaningful relationships I’ve built have come from simply showing up, being curious, having conversations, and allowing people to get to know me and what I’m building.
I also don’t think you have to find someone who has the exact same business or career path as you. Some of my greatest lessons have come from people who were simply further along in an area where I wanted to grow.
And don’t be afraid to reach out. You don’t have to wait until you feel completely ready or established to introduce yourself, ask a question, or start a relationship. At the same time, I’ve learned that not every connection is meant to go the distance, and that’s okay. I trust God to bring the right people into my life at the right time.
