Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Schmidt.
Hi Lorin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I honestly can’t even remember a life where I wasn’t obsessed with makeup, I started wearing makeup to school in 5th grade, I used to wear blue mascara to school and get made fun of for it but I always liked being able to change my appearance and look like a different version of myself everyday. I started doing makeup on other people in high school, getting my friends ready for prom and homecoming and I knew I had a passion for the beauty industry then. I started taking doing makeup seriously in 2019 and started working at sephora in 2021, I worked there as a beauty advisor until 2023 and started esthetician school, sephora had a tuition reimbursement program, I wouldn’t have been able to afford school with out that program, I will forever be grateful to sephora for that. I worked and went to school full time, lots of 10-12 hour days and then I graduated esthetician school and immediately started doing makeup and eyebrows full time at Sephora in Crocker park. I built up a decent clientele and shared my instagram with every person I could and In 2024 I opened my own suite at Blank Canvas Elite suites in North Olmstead and I have been working independently as a professional makeup artist/brow artist since!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Truthfully I feel very lucky with how my story has played out, I had to work incredibly hard to save money and build a life for myself, I knew that If I wanted this to be my career it was going to be a long road until I got where I wanted to be. I am still not where I want to be but I have learned to appreciate the journey. You have to put yourself out there, which is always scary and you have to promote your business at any given opportunity. Opening my business was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life, I wasn’t sure if my clients would follow me, I wasn’t sure If I had it in me to do this, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to afford rent but pushing myself and trusting my gut has rewarded me in every capacity. I struggle with work life balance, I always want to make sure I bring my best self to every single appointment I book and sometimes thats hard when you’re running from job to job and balancing your personal life on top of schedules and the boring mundane behind the scenes work. I live about an hour away from my family which is hard, I work weird, long hours and I don’t get to see my friends or family half as much as I would like to but I’m fortunate to have people in my life who support me and my career and cheer for me from all over!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist and eyebrow artist. I specialize in soft glam makeup but I love to step out of my comfort zone and see where my creativity takes me. I would like to think I’m known for my makeup and brow skills, I would say I’m a perfectionist and cannot let someone leave my chair until I feel 100% confident in my work and the service I provided. I am most proud of opening my own business at 22 years old and watching it grow into something I never could’ve predicted. Secondly I’m proud of the makeup I did for the women on the Cavs dance team this year, It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m so grateful I had the chance to experience that twice. I have done more weddings than I can count this year and I have found a deep love and passion for wedding day glams. I think my personality sets me apart from others, I’m loud, I overshare, I become friends with all of my clients, some would think thats unprofessional but luckily for me, I have found a community of women who lift me up in every way and all I can hope is that I do the same for them!
What matters most to you? Why?
Staying true to myself is what matters to me most. I feel like the current state of social media is all about new trends, new products, new influencers and its so hard to stay true to my craft when other influences come into play but I always try my best to give my clients the brows and makeup they want and deserve. I don’t ever want to lose this version of myself thats hungry to grow in this field, I never want to lose my love or passion to create. there is no better feeling in this world than making someone feel beautiful. I built this business from the ground up, pouring every part of myself into this and I have grown and learned so much in these last couple years and I never want to stop growing and learning. this industry will change you for better or worse and even when I thought about throwing in the towel, my love and passion for this field, helping people, and teaching people, always pulls me right back.
