Check Out Kailyn Zatchok’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailyn Zatchok.

Hi Kailyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
BECK+PALM actually started with me making growth chart rulers! A friend invited me to participate in a vendor event, and I decided to bring along a few onesies with the word “loved” on them. They sold out within minutes, and that experience opened the door to something I hadn’t originally planned.

From there, I started making more shirts and onesies. As customers began requesting personalized pieces, I leaned into that side of the business. Listening to what people wanted has played a big part in how BECK+PALM has grown.

Things really took off when we started offering personalized bubble rompers for babies and toddlers. At the time, I wasn’t seeing anything like them on the market, so it was exciting to create something different and help start a trend that customers loved.

Today, personalized items are a big part of BECK+PALM. I balance the business with being a teacher and a mom, and it’s pretty amazing to look back and realize that a few “loved” onesies at a vendor event helped shape the direction of the entire shop.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road! One of my biggest challenges has been managing inventory, figuring out what to keep in stock and how much. I want to have enough to keep up with orders without having too much inventory sitting on the shelves. Finding that balance has been an ongoing learning process as BECK+PALM has grown.

I’m also a teacher, wife, and mom, so balancing everything is a fun juggling act! Between school, family life, and running the business, there are a lot of moving parts. I’m constantly learning how to manage my time and set realistic expectations for myself. I love what I do, but there’s definitely a lot happening behind the scenes to make it all work!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Recently, as my own kids have gotten older, we’ve been doing more school spirit items, too. It’s been fun to see the business grow along with my family and create things that fit the stage of life we’re in. Listening to customers and being willing to try something new have also helped shape the shop.

What I’m most proud of is that BECK+PALM is a family business. My kids have grown up helping me put orders together, making trips to the post office, and taking pictures for me. They’ve been part of the everyday work that goes into running the shop, and having them involved makes it even more meaningful. I love that they get to see firsthand the creativity, effort, and responsibility that come with building something of your own.

What sets BECK+PALM apart is that personal connection. As a mom, I’m thinking about what I’d want my own kids to wear, and as a small business owner, I’m listening to what other families want, too. The shop reflects both, from a baby’s personalized romper to a school spirit shirt for an older child.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
For me, taking risks has meant being willing to try something without knowing exactly how it will turn out. Bringing those first “loved” onesies to a vendor event was a small step, but it ended up changing the direction of BECK+PALM. The personalized bubble rompers were another example, there wasn’t anything like them that I was seeing at the time, so I had to put the idea out there and see how customers responded.

There’s also a financial risk in deciding what inventory to buy. You’re investing in something you believe will sell, but you can’t always predict what people will want or how quickly it will take off. That’s been one of my biggest lessons in running a business.

Being a teacher, wife, and mom also shapes how I think about risk. I have to consider the time and energy something will take, along with the money. I believe in giving new ideas a chance while being thoughtful about what makes sense for my family. BECK+PALM has grown through trying things, listening to customers, and adjusting along the way.
