Check Out Dcovan Mathews’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dcovan Mathews.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story really started in church. I started playing drums, and pretty quickly I became interested in learning every instrument I could get my hands on. That eventually led me into songwriting and performing.

At the same time, I played football throughout high school, so I grew up with both music and athletics being huge parts of my life. Football taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to push through challenges, while music gave me a way to express myself and connect with people.

Eventually, I decided to take music more seriously. I started performing, releasing my own music, and building an audience online. What started with playing drums in church has grown into me performing professionally, opening shows, and building my own career as a singer-songwriter.

Now I’m continuing to grow, taking on new opportunities, and trying to build something that I can be proud of long-term. I’m still early in my journey, but I’ve come a long way from where I started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hell no. There have been a lot of ups and downs. Trying to build a career in music while also figuring out life has been challenging. There have been times when opportunities didn’t work out, money was tight, things weren’t moving as fast as I wanted, and I questioned whether I was on the right path.

Moving to a new state and starting over brought its own challenges too. I’ve had to learn how to adapt, work hard, and keep going even when things weren’t going my way.

But honestly, I think those struggles have shaped me just as much as the good moments. They’ve taught me resilience, patience, and that if I really want something, I have to keep showing up for it. I’m still figuring things out, but I’m proud that I haven’t let the hard parts stop me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I work a regular job while continuing to build my career as a singer-songwriter and musician. Outside of work, I spend a lot of my time writing, recording, rehearsing, performing, and working on growing my music. I’m an independent Americana/folk artist, so I handle a lot of the creative and business side myself from writing songs and preparing for shows to promoting my music and connecting with people who support what I do.

I’m proud of the fact that I’ve continued pursuing music while working and dealing with everything life has thrown at me. My goal is to eventually make music my full-time career, but for now I’m putting in the work on both sides to build something sustainable.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories would probably be playing music with my family and being around church. I started playing drums when I was young, and I remember how exciting it felt to be able to make music and see people respond to it. I didn’t know it at the time, but those moments really planted the seed for what music would eventually become for me. Looking back, it’s pretty crazy to see how something I started as a kid has turned into something I’m seriously pursuing today.
