Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Carson.
Hi Christy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a creative, but that’s looked like a lot of different things throughout my life!
I studied Communications and Theatre in college and started building a career in marketing. Marketing was a good fit, and I liked the blend of creativity and strategy it called for. Like many others, I was unexpectedly laid off last year in the middle of the worst job economy I’ve ever navigated. It was pretty common for people to joke that the job economy was so bad, you need to just pursue your dreams now, but that’s sort of what I did.
I had been modeling, acting, and creating content on the side for a bit, but I decided to pour my energy into making them my full-time thing. I knew I didn’t need one “thing” or one “job” to be my end all be all, I just needed a mix of ways to use my creativity, communication, and strategic skills, and I needed to make some money while doing it. I won’t pretend I have it all figured out, but I’m getting closer every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh definitely not. Where should I start?
The corporate world itself has so many challenges. I spent years building a marketing career, learning how to advocate for myself and my team, and trying to figure out what “work/life” balance was as burnout inevitably set in.
We already talked a bit about being laid off as well. That was one of my biggest obstacles and turning points. That sudden uncertainty and financial insecurity was super challenging.
Then there’s working freelance and running your own business. That brings its own challenges, of course. Some people are entrepreneurs because they need to be. They have that drive, and they have to be their own boss. I’m not quite like that. I have a creative drive and a strategic drive, and I can do that with a team or on my own. I just happen to be freelance right now. And while I appreciate the freedom and flexibility of working freelance, navigating the financial instability and negotiating every brand deal all on my own is not always my favorite part of the gig. But it’s part of the game and I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge.
And I’ll say that building and finding your community is so key to navigating those challenges. Find the people who support you and want to see you win and be sure you’re pouring into them too.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Short answer? I’m a model, actor, and content creator. Long answer? I’m a freelance creative who specializes in marketing strategy, creative direction, and community building, as well as on-camera talent. Really, I’m a marketer who happens to be great on camera too.
Any given day you’ll find me using a mix of my brand marketing background and my hands-on creator experience to bring a brand campaign to life or a community experience together.
For example, I work a lot with photographer and videographer Kevin Rife (@kevinrifephotos) to produce media for businesses looking for high-quality photos, videos, and local creator partnerships in one place.
And in July I produced Runway on the Rooftop, my first fashion show and cocktail experience in Cincinnati, alongside my friend and fellow creative Lolli (@satcincy). It featured local designers, fashion businesses, and vendors, and the response from everyone involved was so positive! I’m excited to continue bringing people together for events like that.
Other days you’ll find me walking a runway, on set for a photo shoot, or out creating content. Those days are always fun, too. I like the mix. What sets me apart is that I’ve been on both sides of a brand campaign, so I know what brands need and how to deliver it.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Depends on who you are and what you need! Are you a brand or business? I work with brands to tell engaging stories that actually drive results. Are you another creative? Let’s collaborate and bring our communities together! Loved my last event and want to make more experiences like that possible? I’m always looking for sponsors for the next one!
