Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Speelman.
Hi Nate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Stumps Custom Wood was created for the sole purpose of pushing myself beyond my limits. September 19, 2019 life stopped when I was on my way home from welding school. I was involved in a motorcycle accident which resulted in 32 life-saving surgeries. After nearly a year in the hospital and the loss of my leg I needed purpose. Stumps Custom Wood has got me out of my bed, and my chair, and into the homes & lives of each customer.
Stumps Custom Wood offers the highest quality & most unique live edge furniture & decor on the market today. Our mission is to create original pieces that cannot be sourced locally & bring your home, office, or project together through our home decor. From our family to yours we add lots of love & careful attention to each item. We hope you enjoy our work as much as we enjoy offering it to you.
“Be strong & courageous; Do not be frightened or dismayed for the Lord our God is with you wherever you go.”- Joshua 1:9
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Funny question to me because I do not feel we are even on a road… It is by far the most unsmooth thing I’ve ever done. From my inability to walk or my constant nerve pain, there have been struggles daily.
Gratefully I never set out on a journey I thought was going to be easy. Nothing in life comes without a cost. Every day is a new struggle; we work through it as a team and learn and grow to be better.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My walk in life isn’t a walk but a hop. We lost my leg 3 years ago, I say we because I’ve defiantly not been the only one to suffer from the loss of my leg. Although this is my biggest accomplishment to date. Only 270 days after my horrific motorcycle accident we decided to take up woodworking.
At a time I couldn’t even roll out of bed into my wheelchair. What a journey. Although every day I was forced up by my friend, Nathan Koehler. Together we build a 40x20ft room in my basement and a handful of woodworking creations that started our journey to becoming a full-scale wood shop. Everything is made in-house by hand by one of our carpenters.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to not take for granted the things, and people in your life.
The loss of my leg, I can tell you has hindered my ability to do a lot of things to the best of my ability. Every day I learn something new in this journey. Keep an open mind if I can give anyone advice on this subject. Things are not always going to go how you imagined or want. Be ready for when things don’t go the way you imagined. Have a backup plan. Hell has 3-4 backup plans!
