Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherri Sherock.
Sherri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Sherri Sherock and I’m a certified Women’s Health Coach & Functional Fitness Trainer.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and furthered my education by obtaining certifications and licenses in Personal Training, Mobility & Recovery, Health Coaching, and Behavior Change, as well as becoming a Peri to Postmenopause Specialist. I’m also a certified Group Exercise Instructor where I teach sessions of Ugi Functional Fitness, Pink Gloves Boxing, and more. I’m also passionate about mind/body balance and received my certification in Myofascial Release, Ugi Flow, and Restorative Yoga. Soon, I will be completing my Functional Nutrition Counselor certification in December.
I’m a wife and mother to two amazing kids (my daughter is 17 & dare I say my son is 20!). I’m also a proud Autism Mom and I found out the hard way how important it is to be mindful about taking care of yourself and not letting your cup run dry. My journey began when my son was diagnosed with Autism at 3 years old. I spent years researching how foods and movement affect the way he felt and how he could recover. I began thinking to myself how food and movement affect us as well! After years of hard work on his part, he is now driving and attending The University of Toledo.
My health and wellness career and personal journey continued as I reached my 40’s and experienced peri-menopause. I got frustrated with the lack of knowledge on how to support myself as I was going through this midlife transition. The solution was either to take a pill or go on “the pill.” I wanted to know how I can alleviate my symptoms such as weight gain, hot flashes, brain fog, etc. in a more holistic way. This is when I began to dive more into my nutrition and movement further, which in turn helped balance my hormones. This inspired me to get certified as a Peri to Postmenopause Specialist and soon to be a Functional Nutrition Counselor, so I can help educate other women and learn how food and movement can be their medicine.
I created my business, KickSpark Fitness, LLC in 2015 with the intent of breaking down the social stigma of Women 40+ by educating women on how to be STRONG mentally + physically. I want women 40+ to know that they can be strong & powerful, and life does not end here. My mission is to commit to improving the health of women through functional nutrition, movements & knowledge, so they can live a healthy & powerful life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I was in my 30s my son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Every moment of my life was to research and find him the help he needed. Memories of being awake in the middle of the night researching autism, up all night soft brushing my son to help him fall back asleep because he couldn’t regulate himself, being a mom taxi taking him to OT and speech therapy sessions, and the list went on.
Sleepless nights, worry, and stress dragged me down month after month, and I would wind up having to go to the hospital on a monthly basis because I was sick to my stomach. I let my cup run dry and could not function. I ignored what my body was telling me and could no longer function until I got a night of rest in ER.
I am passionate about fitness and healthy living because I know most women out there are doing the same thing. It may not be caring for someone else, it may be stress from work, relationship hardships with loved ones, lack of sleep, emotional eating, etc. I know what it feels like. You don’t take care of yourself first and you are running on empty, completely exhausted.
As I got into my 40’s and experienced perimenopausal symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, hot flashes, etc. I felt that society has told us to concede to it because “that’s what happens when you get older, you just have to accept it.” Not finding the answers I was looking for gave me the feeling that this lack of knowledge was unacceptable. If I couldn’t get the answers I was looking for, then I was determined to find them myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about KickSpark Fitness, LLC?
KickSpark Fitness, LLC is all about women’s health, working with women 40+ going through the pre to postmenopause transition. I always begin where she is in her life and the journey is custom-made for her. The voyage is about positive energy and taking small steps to get to obtainable goals. Her journey is about realizing how age is just a number and learning that she can be STRONG mentally and physically without apologizing. This mindset is reached through the knowledge of paying attention to how her body feels as she moves and how it uses food as nourishment.
I feel my company is set apart from others by addressing peri to postmenopausal challenges with the knowledge that women’s health can be supported with food and movement. There are no diets or hard-core workouts. I empower my clients with this knowledge, so they can incorporate a simple and sustainable lifestyle where they feel independent, strong, and confident.
I specialize in Functional Fitness (movements that mimic activities of daily living) and health coaching (Behavior Change and Functional Nutrition) specifically for women. What I am most proud of brand-wise is that I’m talking about women’s health issues that society has not spoken about and still does not talk about. Educating women that they have a say in their health and not to accept the first thing given to them. Saying it’s ok to question, speak up and learn about their own physiology because this topic was never taught to women or their moms or generations before that. Having empowerment and not having to ask for permission to take control of their own health and learn how amazing that feels.
I offer personal 1:1 fitness training, health coaching, and live virtual group exercise sessions. I also created a self-paced online women’s health program called Wicked Strong where women can learn to sync their wellness (support hormone imbalances) with nutrition and movement. I also created a Free Walking Book Club on social media where you listen to an audiobook while moving your body. It can be walking, running, gardening, or even cleaning your house, as long as you’re moving your body while listening. As I mentioned, I meet every woman where they are, at all levels.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is that I can help women learn how to support their health, learning ways that work for them. The reason is that every “body” is different, so helping them understand what may work for their friend, may not work for them.
Also, social media and society have women feeling pressured to look a certain way even if it jeopardizes their own health. Having a woman understand that how they feel physically and mentally is more important than looks alone. Matter of fact, when a woman becomes a stronger healthier version of herself, her looks also change as she looks confident, with a glow all around her. All in all, good health = radiance.
