Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny K. Wu.
Hi Johnny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started our video production company back in 1998 and started to be visually creative and make films while providing production services for small and medium businesses, once in a while we do have some fortune 500 businesses reaching out to ask for our niche service: be able to produce videos or events in Chinese, Spanish, and English.
I started the business with a dear friend who is a talented photographer/videographer and I am good with business planning and execution. In 2001, I was commuting here in Cleveland and LA for a client and got to learn a lot about LA’s top-tier publicists and worked very closely with them (with most of the PR written by me). All the experiences prompted me to be well-versed in business, filmmaking, video, and event producing, and am now doing this full-time since 2007.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From 1998 to 2007, it was a part-time endeavor, and learned a lot, especially while in LA (commuting every other week), learned and met with many A-list actors and producers and that has crafted my understanding of publicity and marketing, which added to to to my knowledge with my MBA.
Freelancer work is hard, and I’ve been fortunate to have friends who reached out asking me to help with their work while slowly building my portfolio, which is why in 2007 I went full time and get it to continue till now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In addition, to doing projects for clients, we also produce events as well as being creative and making our own short and long-form films. My goal is to continue to learn and challenge myself to become better and so every film I make or every project I am involved, it must be better than the previous one, which forces me to be a better filmmaker/creative. You can see it in our projects.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Cleveland offers a lot, we have a lot of talented crew and cast, as well as many interesting locations, not to mention a lot of seasons so you can easily pick and choose what you want to make it work. The cost of living here is way better/lower than in any other metropolitan city, and Cleveland is a great place to raise a family as well.
