Check Out Kerri & Dan Motter’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerri & Dan Motter. They and their team share their story with us below:

In 2009, Kerri was laid off from her job as a graphic designer at the Wapakoneta Daily News, a local newspaper. A few months later, the Waynesfield-Goshen Hogh School Athletic Director, Doug Foley suggested she start her own business. They would be her first client, and she would sell the ads, design the layout & print the sports programs that you buy at football, basketball, volleyball games, etc. The school would print the first batch until she had purchased a commercial printer. That is how Motteriffic Creations began in April of 2009. Currently, Motteriffic Creations has many private and corporate clients and specializes in wedding invitations, business cards, forms, and logo creation.

In 2012, Dan & Kerri Motter were working at a local wedding venue, SoSerene, part-time when the owners, Mark & Joy Meyer, saw photo booths coming into their facility. They suggested the Motters buy one and rent it for extra income. They purchased one, and Motteriffic Photo Booth became a reality, and they had 12 rentals in 2012. The following year Dan added DJ Services to the business, so it was renamed Motteriffic Music & Photo Booth. The business has increased every year, and they have added uplighting and pipe & drape (backdrop) rental. The Motters have grown their business to include four photo booths, a video booth, and five DJs, employing family and friends to enable them to do multiple events in one day. Currently, Motteriffic Creations and Motteriffic Music & Photo Booth are under the Motteriffic LLC umbrella and have over 160 events booked for 2022 and over 35 for 2023. Most of their events are weddings, but they also do a lot of corporate events, graduation parties and birthday parties. In 2021, they traveled to Las Vegas and purchased a 360 video booth, and it has been a big hit with a lot of clients. The videos have special effects, logos, and music added to them and are immediately sent to the client’s phone, email or Instagram.

Not everything has gone smoothly. In 2017, they purchased 3 party buses and updated the inside of each bus. They rented the buses for 3 years but unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, that business did not survive, so in 2020 & 2021, they sold the buses & closed Motteriffic Excursions.

On February 1, 2022, Dan retired from his job at American Trim after 42 years to help Kerri with their growing businesses. This has enabled them to do events during the week as well as on weekends. Motteriffic Creations & Motteriffic Music & Photo Booth are a one-stop shop for many clients from save the dates, invitations, wedding programs, DJ, Photo Booth and more. The clients receive a 10% discount on all printing when they book any of the other services.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the struggles was when Kerri was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. They were very blessed to have a great support system, and never missed an event or printing deadline. The supply chain for ink and paper since the pandemic has made it a bit harder. The price of ink doubled, and paper prices have increased by about 50%, but they still try to stay competitive. Their loyal clients seem to appreciate what they have to offer at a price that makes them happy and satisfies the business’s profitability. The support staff jumped in to help with events when Kerri wasn’t up to it, and they feel very lucky to have such great family and friends.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The National High School Sports Publication Awards has honored Motteriffic Creations every year since 2010 with an award for the Waynesfield-Goshen sports programs. Motteriffic Creations has also received awards for Perry High School since 2016. For a few years, Allen East High School & Upper Scioto Valley High School sports programs were clients. The National High School Sports Publication Awards are designed to recognize excellence in the preparation of Media Guides and Souvenir Programs that call attention to athletic teams at the secondary school level throughout the United States of America. It does not matter what sport or sports your entry promotes. It does not matter if your school is public or private, large or small. It does not matter if your entry was assembled by students, volunteer parents, or professionals. The National High School Sports Publication Awards has a category designed to recognize your commitment to excellence. The judges review hundreds of entries, looking for the gold, silver, and bronze award winners in each category. In 2016, the Waynesfield-Goshen Sports Program was selected as the Grand Award Winner, which was the best of the best award. This fall, Ridgemont High School contacted Motteriffic Creations to create & print their sports programs. Hopefully they will be among the elite winners in the contest in 2023.
